Windows 7 x64 build 7601. I just got, I guess, the latest update from
MS. Now all of the computer permissions have changed. Anyone have any idea how to get them set back the way they were withiout resetting each and everyone? R Wink |

This requires that you make a permissions backup in advance. In an Administrator command prompt window... icacls c:\ /save ntfsCdrive.txt /t /c CErr.txt 2&1 What that does, is keeps two text files. The "ntfsCdrive.txt" contains a log of permissions. The "Cerr.txt" file contains a progress log (there should be 62 failures minimum on the C: partition, because the command is not allowed to descend into Junction Points - the actual Junction Point content permissions are recorded in other lines of the file, no problem). You can play the permissions back, to "reload" the permissions. To fix the very top of the drive (permissions on C:\ which is tough to do), requires editing the text file that holds the information, and replacing the top blank line with a "." character. https://social.technet.microsoft.com...backup-restore Run "icacls c:\ /save ntfsCdrive.txt /t /c CErr.txt 2&1" without the quotes. Edit ntfsCdrive.txt . The format is filename --- first line is blank, and is for C:\ . Place "." on this line. Save ACL Filename ACL Now the file will look like |

Check if the Windows account under which you login is still in the security group that you were in before. If your Windows account had been in the Administrators security group but got changed to just the Users security group then you don't have all the admin privileges that you had before. I don't remember what update it was but awhile ago after installing a bunch of them there were problems loading some programs. I kept getting a dialog that I did not have permissions. At that time, it was easier to restore to a backup image saved before the updates (always save an image backup before installing Windows update or before installing new software so you have an escape route - System Restore will NOT get your disk back to its previous state before the installs). I found out that my Windows account was no longer in the Administrators security group. I had to log in under the Administrator account (never touched except for emergency use) to add my Windows account back into the Administrators security group. Then my programs all ran okay when I logged under my normal Windows account. Run: C:\Windows\System32\control.exe /name Microsoft.UserAccounts Is your account listed (in the icon) under the security group you expected it to be? Run: C:\Windows\System32\control.exe userpasswords2 Is your Windows account in the correct [security] Group? I would never have expected a Windows update to change to which security group my Windows account was assigned but it happened. With a backup image saved, I did the patches again and, bang, again lost my permissions. I was prepared this time and had more time to work on what happened. I don't know why I checked there but noticed I was no longer in the Administrators security group. Put my account back in and, voila, no permissions problem. Really strange that an update would change my account to a different (and more restricted) security group. |

I fooled around and restored what I needed. BUT, what had happened, I
guess, is that my account moved from the adminstrator group to a user group. Some of the programs I have require that they be run as an administrator and some can't run that way, or at leasse will not cooperate. Thanks to all who replied, particularlly Paul. I will take your advice in the future so that this doesn't happen again. On Tue, 1 Mar 2016 11:24:08 -0500 (EST), Nil wrote: rwwink Wrote in message: Windows 7 x64 build 7601.
