Default Macrium 6 free or Macrium 7 free

Updated Macrium 6 free today, and got a message that version 7 free is also
available.
Does anyone know the main difference, or have a link to comparison of the
two?

Or will 7 allow 6 restores

A version 7 Reflect Free CD will restore V6 or V7 backups.

A version 6 Reflect Free CD cannot restore a V7 backup.

That's if the pattern on previous media holds true. They
do a version check at restore time. Technically, there might
not be (sufficient) differences for it to matter, but
they just do the simple check and reject your attempt
if you're using an old CD.

It means, you should be preparing new emergency CDs with
each release you keep in the house.

And potentially the only difference in the Free version,
would be backup speed. Watch for the placebo effect, and
time with your stop watch.

I find the CD makes slower backups than the OS version does.

You can make backups or clones from the CD, as well
as doing the same from the OS install. As far as I can remember,
the old Linux boot CD might have had fewer functions. They had
a built-in Linux boot CD at one time, inside the main installer,
but everyone is using the WinPE disc now (and that requires a
larger download of materials from Microsoft at the beginning).
They stopped including the Linux boot CD image some time ago,
which made the main installer file a bit smaller. The main
(program) installer might be 40MB, while the WinPE materials
download from Microsoft might be 500MB+ . Once the Microsoft
materials are downloaded, they're processed and ZIPped, and
the resulting file on your hard drive, is not the same size
as the actual download done. The ZIP materials should be smaller.

There are at least four flavors of WinPE materials available.
WinPE5 or WinPE10 should have USB3 drivers, so you get the
speed of USB3 when using external USB3 enclosures and ports.
That's an incentive to not use the earlier WinPE versions,
when preparing emergency boot CDs. If your PCs only had
USB2 ports, then it might not matter which WinPE you used.
I suppose there might be some BIOS boot differences between
them, but I've never had a problem (so far) with that aspect.
You might need a more modern WinPE, if you had a UEFI only
or UEFI+SecureBoot platform. I don't purposely try to make
my life miserable, by using stuff like that. I don't own
an 8" Win10 tablet.

It won't help, because the terminology in the
comparison table, changed between the V6 table
and the V7 table. The V6 table can be fetched
from archive.org . Those tables highlight the
differences between the free and the various
paid versions.

Paul, the site does state the changes from 6 to 7. Unfortunately, either
I read it wrong or they lie. Version 7 has their image protection option,
but that only works for the paid version, They also claim a faster
differential backup.

The V7 table says ransomware protection (guard thing) is a
paid feature. I wouldn't expect them to give that away.

The free version is designed to do a basic backup for
people, and even the older versions fully meet that
description.

And I did see a forum comment that V7 seemed to be faster,
but I wouldn't say a thing like that without my stopwatch :-)
I always have to be on-guard for the placebo effect
("newer is always better"). Like say, Firefox using
1GB of memory for a single tab = "better" :-/
