Default Install Recovery Console SP2 Slipstreamed

I cannot get the recovery console to install. I get the usual "files on pc
are newer than..." blahblahblah.

I've made several slipstreamed CD's and none of them work. They seem
totally function and correct in all other aspects.

Any suggestions?

Not saying this is your fix but - RecoveryConsole with Slipstreamed sp2 Home
here works .. only thing I can think of that may have changed the 'Files
newer' messages were fixed by backing up the following inf's and then...
Modify the Fp40ext.inf and Ims.inf files
1. Open the Fp40ext.inf file in Notepad. The Fp40ext.inf file is
located in the C:\Windows\inf folder.
2. Locate the line that contains the following text:
[Strings]
3. Locate each line that contains the word "Professional."
4. Delete each instance of "Professional" and replace each instance
with "Home."
5. Save and close the Fp40ext.inf file.
6. Open the Ims.inf file in Notepad. The Ims.inf file is located in
the C:\Windows\inf folder.
7. Locate the line that contains the following text:
[Strings]
8. Locate each line that contains the word "Professional."
9. Delete each instance of "Professional" and replace each instance
with "Home."
10. Save and close the Ims.inf file.

I'm curious, have you tried this Rock? I can't try it right now; my XP
machine is still tied up testing the SP2 - SP1 via repair install but I
might try it sometime later on.

You have to dig a bit to get to it from the link you posted so I'm
posting the contents of the work-around destructions for easier reference.

Steve

Work around compliments of "Jon" from the msnews newsgroups.

You can install Recovery Console, AFTER SP2 installation, via the following
workaround.....

For this you need the full network version of SP2.

Downloadable from here (link):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

1. Open a command prompt in the folder containing the SP2 installer
and type
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe -x
Choose a folder to extract the files to e.g. file:///c:/SP2files

2. Make a backup of the file winnt32.exe in c:\windows\i386

3. Replace the winnt32.exe file in c:\windows\i386 with the identically
named file in C:\sp2files\i386 (or in the i386 folder in the folder where
you extracted the files)

4. Open a command prompt at c:\windows\i386
Type winnt32.exe /cmdcons
Recovery Console should install
(Ignore the first error message, if any)

5. Replace the winnt32.exe in c:\windows\i386 with its original version
(created in step 2)

Hope this works for you

Jon

No I haven't tried it. I already had the recovery console installed
prior to adding SP2. The directions are from Michael Stevens' site.

An interesting one there, the "work around", however it failed on several
accounts. I have no \I386 in the win folders, etc.

I think I have a bad slipstreamed CD. There are files on there with dates
older than the ones in the win folders. I will pursue it from that end. It
sure would explain the errors I have.
