No Mouse in Safe Mode

I am having a problem getting my mouse to load in safe mode. The drivers for this mouse are up to date.

I am running WindowsXP with all of the updates. The label on the underside of the mouse reads "Intellimouse 1.1A Serial Compatible Microsoft Corporation". Aida identifies the mouse as "Microsoft Serial Intellimouse".

In normal mode, this mouse works fine, however, when I boot up in safe mode, the mouse is frozen, as if the drivers are not loaded. In order to navigate in safe mode, I have to use the up and down arrow keys.

Can anyone give me advice on how to get my mouse to load in safe mode?

Connect a PS2 mouse. Safe Mode by definition disables hardware drivers
to eliminate the possibility of errors from failed drivers. PS2 is BIOS
controlled.

Some BIOS's have an option for allowing native support for USB mice. I'm
wondering if this would help at all.

Probably not... typically it relates specifically to USB which is not
normally recognized outside of Windows. Virtually all modern mice are
either ps/2 and/or USB. I haven't seen a serial mouse for ages.

I am beginning to suspect that a PS2 mouse is not going to fit on my
computer. If I remember correctly, the PS2 mouse has a "connection fitting"
on the computer similar to the keyboard connection fitting. My computer has
only one such connection fitting, and that is for the keyboard. Unless a PS2
mouse can have both type connection, it looks like I'm up the proverbial
creek without the proverbial paddle. Thanks for your help.

Your computer must be really ancient, if it only has one ps/2 connection.
Yes, the ps/2 mouse connection looks identical to the keyboard one. Do you
have a USB connection? If so, most mice now come both ways (i.e. they have
a USB plug with a ps/2 converter). You can get USB adapter cards to fit in
a PCI slot.
