Default Display Prop. don't hold

Thank you for taking time to review this question. I am dealing with a new
Dell Celeron machine running XP Home ... out of box for a week, max. Display
settings can be changed (to 800x600 in this case), but no question comes up
asking if I wanna keep these settings (with the countdown clock). I change
the settings, but when I reboot, they are back on default. This just HAS to
be a simple setting, but darned if I know where it is. No new hardware has
been added internally. Only printer, mouse, and Yahoo keyboard, externally.
I went to MSCONFIG and on the General tab and I have, pre-selected, Original
Boot.ini, and cannot choose the Modified Boot.ini. Don't know if this is a
symptom or not, but I thought I'd mention it.
Again, my thanks.

Just out of curiosity, what are the display settings you're
changing from? The only way I can duplicate the behavior you're
seeing is to run msconfig, click on the Boot.ini tab and put a
check mark in the box next to Basevideo. When I restart the
computer my display settings are changed to 600 X 480, 8 bit.
When I change the setting to 800 X 600, 32 bit, the
confirmation box does not pop up. You might want to check
msconfig and see if that's what's happening on your system.
FYI, checking that box makes a change in the boot.ini file by
adding /basevideo to the line referencing your XP installation.

If this isn't your problem and you have no luck fixing it, you
might want to contact Dell Support:

Download drivers
http://support.dell.com/support/inde...=19&l=en&s=dhs

See if there is an updated driver for your system's video
adapter.

You can also post a question to their forum or setup a chat
session with one of their support personnel:

Good luck
