Well there is some good news...It's quite easy to
uninstall) Just go to the control panel and Add/Remove
programs. Of course I didn't want to uninstall it because
I wanted the SP2's protection from spyware/pop-ups etc.
and there are somw classes of nasty that my combination
of ANtivirus/antighost and andit adware progs just don't
seem to be able to stop. I'm using the windows firewall
but still seem to be getting hacked about once a week.
Anyway when I installed SP2 everything seemed to be
running fine until I tried to right click on a file name
in windows explorer. The system froze and after about 2
minutes A Dr Watson Postmortem (! very funny microsoft, I
don't think) appeared and started error reporting.

Have you scanned your computer from Safe Mode with Dos prompt, using a
command line scanner, for virus infections?

Gareth.

I get these event errors all the time on my DSL machine.
It's about WMI but I can satisfiy whatever it is that it
wants. I have a network of two other XP pro clients and
they installed and run fine. The W2K client seems to
thing he is the master brower when I forget to turn him
off and the others get re-booted. I figure he needs
something to do.

I know most computer related newsgroups are used in such

a way as to
discuss problems and find cures...that's why you don't

find many "feels
good, works great" posts. However, SP2 seems to be

taking a hell of a
hit. I haven't installed it and if I base my decision

solely on what
I've read here I probably won't until the defects are

worked out. My
question is: has anyone had a successful installation of

SP2? Surely
the patch hasn't screwed up EVERY computer it touches in

one way or
another...or has it? I'd like to hear of some (any?)

success stories of
SP2 actually working and not breaking software apps and

settings. Thanks.

I installed it on Thursday from the Microsoft XP SP2 CD Rom:
Actual install time including reboot was under 30 minutes.

Initial reboot was slow but reloaded all previously installed settings,
themes, and programmes successfully.
The only minor problem was that the system tray did not show all the

startup
icons, even thought the 10+ startup utils and programmes did start OK.

After 2 - 3 reboots the icons re-appeared, and after running a BootVis
optimise and trace, reboot to desktop is back down to 24 seconds....
Over all it's been a painless upgrade for me....

Before doing the install I read all the nesecary info on how to install

SP2,
disconnected from the 'net, did a full backup of the OS partition,

defragged
all drives, ran disk cleanup, then shut down all but the esential services
ands applications using task mamanger and then let it install.

Doesn't sound like something for an amateur to do. Where did you read this
info?

I have XP SP2 installed on two work computers. I have disabled the XP
Firewall due to incompatibility issues., however these computers are
firewall protected by other means.

So far so good. Nothing important broke. VMWare workstation works
fine, all my client software works just fine, my companys website
still works. We don't use VPN so we didn't have to deal with that
issue.

The minor annoyances are that when I go to Panda antivirus to scan my
computer, the popup msg telling me what infected files it found is
blocked. It takes hours to scan some of my PCs.

Nortons' AV online scan also has the results popup window blocked.

When I go to Trend AV and do a system scan, I have to right click on
the activex control to install it several times each time I go there.

But the positive flip side of this is this annoyance will (hopefully)
stop spyware and viruses as well.

I usually surf the web using Firefox. I only use these sites in IE,
and SUS admin site, and Firefox for the rest. Firefox has it's own
security issues. Apparently the XP SP2 fix made some changes that
affect Firefox. Runing .9.3, when I click on an .EXE to download such
as a patch, and select RUN, the .EXE is downloaded but it fails to
execute. I am not certain if this is XP SP2, but that is when I
started to notice this change.

My fathers Outlook Express quit working after he installed SP2.
Disabling the firewall did not help (Stopped service.) Not sure if
this is related.

I am also seeing a (small) noticable decrease in the number of zombies
that hit my firewall. This is a very big plus to me.

% computers at home, 21 at work that I am responsible for maintaining,
installed SP2 on all with only a minor problem on one machine (NIC card
solved with updated driver).

SP2 delivered here. Very satisfied with it. I still maintain that the
majority of those having problems with SP2 (non Prescott owners), had issues
with the pre-existing installation of windows, and SP2 merely exacerbated an
already bad install.

There are a variety of folks reporting that windows explorer
"has issues." Some simply have it crash, some have it crash
on certain keystrokes or mouse clicks, some can't get any
keystrokes or mouse clicks to be accepted. There are enough
people reporting the same kinds of symptoms that I'm guessing
there are at least a couple of bugs behind this.

Having read thousands of postings about SP2 problems I have
not seen a single example of a demonstrated fix for the
windows explorer problem.

I opened an incident with Microsoft, they concluded "some
file must be corrupted, repair windows, try installing the
full 260 megabyte SP2 twice while in safe mode and tell us
if the problem goes away."

This may be correct, this may be all wrong, use this with
caution.

I'm just an amatuer... ;-)

Where did you read
this info?

All of the above are basic system/OS maintenace anyway. To keep your
computer(s) running 'smoothly' backups, defrags, disk cleanups, etc, are
normal housekeeping tasks that should be done regularly.

Shutting down programs and services before doing an update to the OS are
fairly simple as well; Just right click on any icons in the system tray and
select exit from their pop up menus. Then Press Cntrl Alt Del (at the same
time) to start task manager and shut down any running applications.

Shutting down running processes (from the Task managers processes Tab)
requires a little bit of care; generally you can shut down processes that
are running under your user ID (or name) and you can leave processes running
under system, Local service, or network service alone.

One process that should be left running under your user ID is explorer.exe.
If you do shut it down accidentally you can restart it from Task Manager by
clicking on the new task button and typing explorer.exe.

If you're not sure about what processes to shutdown then leave them running.
Generally shutting down a running application will stop it's running
processes anyway.
Most processes have descriptive names and you should be able to figure out
what they are...

Once all running applications (and uneeded processes) are shut down you can
then run the update.

When the update re-boots during the install it will also restart the
applications and processes that you have shut down.

Do you have DivX installed?
Many with DivX report the right click issue goes away after removing
DivX.

After this I hit the newsgroups to see if I'd messed up
my install and found several messages on this site about
how to prepare your computer. This included removing a
driver called DIVX which wasn't on my computer anyway.
AFter freeing 4Gb disk space, defragging, closing down
lots of processes and stopping my antivirus. I
reinstalled SP2 again. Just the same no right click.
Has anybody got a fix for this problem yet apart from
reformatting my hard drive, or should I just stick with
SP1 which works fine apart from its security problems?
Andy

Howdy,
This may help on the Explorer & right-click problem (at least I hope it =
sheds some light).
