I am having trouble deciphering, sometimes a letter is underlined and it seems on some menus that indicates ctrl H and on some it indicates alt-H. how to tell??? where can I find an overview. |

how do I find out what key combos mean, i.e. ctrl-H
An underlined letter is the letter that (if's it the only item with that letter underlined) if pressed will activate that menu item. No alt or ctrl. If more than one item has that letter (called an access key) then it selects each item in turn (but doesn't activate it, just selects). Next to some menu items will be the shortcut key listed. This is only here to help you learn the shortcut keys and otherwise have nothing to do with a menu.
Alt is the menu activation key. As a time saver you can combine alt with the access key in the top level menu. Similarly, with a mouse, menus have two modes of operating - pull down and popup. Pull down - Depress button on top menu, menu opens and drag mouse down to item and release button. Note the new Start Panel does not support this. Yet another design bug from MS's inexperienced designers. Pop Up - Click top menu, click menu item. The third type is Drop Down that windows doesn't support. You can emulate it. Press Alt + F (and pretend to yourself you didn't). Now the menu (and all menus) will drop down whenever the mouse is over a menu. No clicking at all till you activate an item. In real drop down the menu closes if the mouse isn't over it. Serenity's Shortcut Keys and Key Modifiers for the Windows Shell To move around the desktop toolbars, Taskbar, Notification Area and the Desktop - press Ctrl + Escape (or the Winkey) to activate Start, Escape to cancel the menu, then Tab and Shift + Tab to the various parts of the screen. Use the arrow keys to move within a section. Winkey + B jumps straight to the System Notification Area. To get a context menu of a blank part of the taskbar use the clock's context menu. Tim typed: I have a recent hand injury and I am trying to use the keyboard rather than the mouse. I am having trouble deciphering, sometimes a letter is underlined and it seems on some menus that indicates ctrl H and on some it indicates alt-H. how to tell??? The Windows standard for an unscored letter on a menu is Alt plus that letter. However, there's no guarantee that every program adheres to that standard. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup |
