Hey, AntiMatter Good Guy, you can run ChromEdge in Linux.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/8409...-edge-on-linux

Take the Windows 7 download version and run it under WINE.
As the graphics might work better in the Windows 7 version.

Let's hope it's using something other than crypt32.dll and Schannel.

And according to the "license" it has the same spyware
as Chrome. But it also has IE mode. So is MS chasing
Google's tail lights, or is it more like a venus fly trap,
absorbing nutriment any garbage-living fly who stops by?

At any rate, it's ridiculous to talk about any of these
browsers being OSS. Firefox is OSS. The core from
Apple is OSS. The similarity stops there. When you don't
have any choice about software calling home to report
your activities, that's not OSS.

People can see The Edg "license" here, on the "features"
page.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/features

(If it's not visible, disable CSS.) Parts of the browser are
OSS, but the browser itself is not. The license includes
forced updates. Also...

"2.5 Communications with You. Microsoft may use your contact information (i)
to communicate with you about your use of the Software, and (ii) to provide
you with additional information, about the Software and other Microsoft
products or services."

In other words, expect ads in the brower.

"2.7 Data Collection. The Software may collect information about you and
your use of the Software and send that to Microsoft."

In other words, this product is spyware. Expect
targetted ads.

It then goes on to say you may not "reverse engineer,
decompile, disassemble, decrypt or otherwise attempt
to derive the source code of the Software". They also
claim you agree to them calling you on the phone or
texting you with surveys or ads. And they claim you
waive the right to take part in a class action lawsuit.
Also, you are not allowed to remove popups or "notices"
in the browser.

They even explain that you are banned from using the
product illegally or in a not-nice way. (section 2.8)

Imagine a hunting knife with a license
that claims, "By using this knife you agree that it will
not be used to clean or butcher illegally hunted animals.
Nor will it be used to cut, scrape, or score any material
illegally obtained or in any way that could conceivably
impose on the rights of others. If you disobey this
agreement you will forfeit your right to use the knife."

So much for OSS. This is a further step in defining
software as a service. In this case it's the browser.
We're only a hop, skip and a jump away from browser
makers arguing that, "We spy less and show less ads
that the other guy." And Win10 denizens will probably
think that sounds good.

It even behaves like free software.

WINE worked a lot of magic to get that far. And,
it was quiet while doing it. I assumed the install
failed, because the log messages stopped happening.
But the install appears to have finished. I moved one
of my Terminal windows out of the way, and was shocked
to see a desktop icon.

The launch command (which I can't find) has
a "do-not-deelevate" parameter in the command, and that's
why the command thinks it is running as administrator. I can't
control that using just that stinkin icon on the desktop.

But this is why they make puzzles, to keep you busy.

Notice that the fonts are pretty terrible looking.
The browser looks like a wooden chair in a rustic rural setting,
that's been standing in the sun too long and the
paint is coming off.

"It's our best browser yet"

That's a clever angle: The poage is having a problem,
not the browser.

I thought there was a Linux version? Did they only
make an Android version for phones and shut out Linux?!

I'd be curious to hear analysis of its performance
on Windows. It sounds like a clever plan to make a browser
that bypasses Google's tricks.

They said they were making one for Linux, but it hasn't
been seen yet.

Maybe the licenses don't line up or something.
Like, a "lawyer problem" is stopping it.

Maybe if they'd written it in Java, it would run anywhere :-)
(MsJava of course.)

I run Windows 10. I've always hated Edge but I thought I would give the
new version a chance, so I just downloaded and installed it.

I also hate Chrome, and I greatly prefer FireFox over all the other
choices of browsers.

To me, the most important differences between browsers have to do with
their interface, not with their speed. I also don't care whether what I
consider to be an improvement in the interface is built-in or comes
from an extension.

When I look at the new Edge, to me it looks much like the old Edge, so I
thought I would ask several questions about it that are important to me,
and I hope that someone here can provide some information about it. In
no particular order:

1. Is it possible to have a menu bar?

2. Is it possible to have a new page, whether invoked from a link, from
a search, or any other way, automatically open in a new tab rather than
the existing one, keeping all already open tabs open?

3. Is it possible to have favorites in a sidebar, rather than a toolbar?
With today's widescreen monitors, I think that's greatly preferable.

4. Is it possible to have a separate search bar, and not have to use the
bar in which URLs are entered?

5. Is it possible to change the order of toolbars?

6. Is it possible to have mouse gestures? I especially want gestures for
close tab, go to the previous page, go to the top of the page, and go to
the bottom of the page.

7. Is it possible to have have multiple URLs for a home page?

8. Is it possible to have a toolbar button for Enpass, my preferred
password manager?

9. Is it possible to have a toolbar button for TinyURL or some similar
program?

10. Any extensions that are particularly recommended?

Any other comments about differences between with FireFox and the new
Edge, and what makes you think either is better than the other would be
greatly appreciated.
