Default little search bar ??

Hi All,

Under Windows 7 and Windows Nein, oops Ten, with Classic Shell,
when you press the start button, you get a small search bar.
This bar is rather useful for things like starting a cmd prompt
with administrator privileges.

All attempt at Duck Duck Go to get this (without Classic Shell)
lead back to Cortina. Don't want Contina.

Is there some win? keystroke to get the little search
bar? Or some such?

Many thanks,
-T

In Win10, just open the start menu and start typing. It will be Cortana
doing the search, but you can disable a bunch of results if I recall
correctly, so that it mostly only returns local stuff. It's not exactly
the same - the search in Classic Shell only returns programs, but it's
better than nothing.

How do you use it to run an admin command prompt? For me, if I type
"CMD" in that Classic Shell box, it returns 55 different *.cmd scripts,
whereas if I type "CMD" in Win10 menu, it returns the command prompt
(which you can then right-click)...

Regards,

And if you type CMD "over" the Win10 Start Menu it doesn't work? This
doesn't work in Win7, but it works fine for me in Win10...

If I part over the start menu and start typing, I see icons
matching the letter I just types highlight.

It's actually called "Command Prompt", so if you start typing that, the
right thing should come up. For me, I get as far as "com" before Control
Panel falls away and I'm left with Command Prompt as the primary choice.
As always, just right click on the search result and click "Run as
Administrator".

It's even easier to simply pin an admin command prompt to the taskbar so
that it's available with a single click. As with all Command Prompts
going back past at least XP, I enable Quick Edit mode so that I can
copy/paste without using menus. Copy becomes highlight+Enter, while
paste becomes Rt-Click.

I use it a lot to run notepad. It is much faster than
playing "Where's Waldo" with the tiles

Hmm, not sure I understand what you mean. When you open the Win10 start
menu, and right away, without scrolling it or touching anything else,
you start typing stuff, Cortana comes up and starts searching for what
you type. She returns all kinds of garbage, but she does tend to put
programs first, so typing CMD should return the Command Prompt as the
first result. Works for me anyway.
