Adding Win 2000 features to Win 8
Can anyone recommend a way to put the following Win 2000 style links on the Win 8 desktop? I'm having a heck of time finding anything on the computer with Win 8 interface.
1. Win2000 style Windows Explorer that opens in the "old" format --- panel listing drives on the left with folders/files on the right. 2. Win2000 style Start Menu -- with links to programs, settings, search, run Thanks buddies! Snuffy |

I can certainly recommend Classic Shell for the second one. For the first, what I do is to create a shortcut to explorer with the following command line in the "target" field: %windir%\explorer.exe /e,c:\ The /e gives the expanded view and makes c:\ the default folder which is displayed in the right hand pane. |

Win2000 style Start Menu -- with links to programs, settings, search, run Thanks buddies! Snuffy First upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 There is a world of difference between Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Windows 8 is hardly useable, Windows 8.1 is a evolutionary change from Windows XP and 7 and I find very useable. Next in the task bar of the Windows 8.1 desktop, right click the taskbar, Properties, and Navigation. Make sure that The first item in Start Screen are checked. "When I sign in or closeall apps.................." Windows Explorer: Go to the Windows function and search for File Explorer. Right click on File Explorer in the list of items found, and pin to the Start Menu and to the Taskbar. Search is an entry found when you right click the MS Icon on the left end of the Desktop taskbar. (The standard shutdown options are also there) Now you can access all files on your computer from the taskbar or start menu, as you could on previous versions of Windows. From the Windows 8.1 Start screen or Apps (Down arrow Start Screen) pin all of the programs you normally use to the Desktop Taskbar. Those you use occassionally to the start menu. Lastly. You can access all of the Computer functions by right clicking on the MS logo on the left side of the Desktop taskbar. Finally while it is not like Windows 7, I find that with all of the programs I use pinned to the taskbar, and the Start menu I am quite comfortable using Windows 8.1. The nice thing about the Windows 8.1 start Screen is that I can see it without my glasses, and I do not have to fight the horrible collapsing menus that has been a trade mark of Windows since the beginning. |

When you mouse to expand a menu but don't click, moving the pointer to a menu item will often collapse the menu. I've never seen that unless you accidentally move the mouse pointer to an adjacent menu branch, even temporarily. Then, yes, of course the menu collapses, as it should. Otherwise, I've never seen the menu collapse on its own and haven't heard anyone else mention it. Are you seeing different behavior? |

Collapsing menus has been my biggest complaint against Windows Starting with Windows ME ( Before that I was running IBM OS/2 on all of my computers.) I am currently running Windows 8.1 after trying to use Windows 10. The problem has not disappeared over the years and revisions. I spent about 3 minutes today trying to drag an item to a submenu. You drag to the first level, then the second, and when you try the third the whole thing collapses and you start over. The only way that I could see a person not realizing this, is if they have become so use to this behavior, they do not realize the problem. |

Yeah, the only difference I found after "upgrading" is it now takes my computer 4 times as long to boot and reboot. Sometimes on reboot it sits on a black screen for about 2 minutes, and then the desktop icons refresh twice. And yes, I have the latest video driver. |

The only way that I could see a person not realizing this, is if they have become so use to this behavior, they do not realize the problem. Maybe we should take a poll. I've *never* seen the cascading menu collapse all on its own, going all the way back to Win 95 or at least going back as far as I can remember. The only way I can duplicate what you're reporting is to move the mouse pointer off of that branch. I think I suggested this before, but I'm guessing that you're unintentionally moving the mouse pointer up or down so that it touches an adjacent menu branch. You may not realize that you're doing it. In other words, user error and not a design flaw. By the way, did you know that you can increase the delay (via Registry edit) so that you can temporarily move off of the current branch without causing a collapse? That might be a tweak that would help you. |

Interstitial clicking (is that a thing?) might help Keith, as well, since it would force him to stay on the current menu branch, at least during the click event. In between those intermediate clicks, though, he could still let the mouse pointer wander away, causing the menu to collapse again. |
