The vast majority of users do not upgrade their operating system, I wouldn't upgrade from windows 7 and only switched to that because I bought a new machine with it pre-installed. So the numbers shown probably simply reflect purchasing patterns. |

"Market share" has to do with the number sold, not with the number being used. So, for example, if 3,000 Fords are sold and 1,000 Chevrolets are sold, Ford has 75% of the market share. But if there are another 2,000 Fords being driven (a total of 5,000) and another 14,000 Chevrolets are being driven (a total of 15,000) Chevrolet has 75% of the number of users. |

In this case, your assertion might not apply. If you read the collection methodology employed by NetMarketShare, it would appear they are basing the reported statistics on actual usage as collected from visits to numerous websites. See: http://www.netmarketshare.com/faq.aspx#Methodology Admittedly, this does not account for machines which are not used on the web or that do not access any of the 40,000 web sites they poll for data. Here local stores don't sell Windows XP anymore. |

People still using Windows XP are simply not interested in increasing the productivity of their staff. For example, Office 2013 has some really good new functions that can simplify and speed-up the calculations but people still using XP can't use Office 2013 so their only option is to continue using Office 2010, 2007 or Office 2003. These people are simply not interested in progress. I use Windows 8.1 and Office 2013 and my entire staff in my department have been given the the new OS and new office product. They are really excited about new products and the attendance have improved; the quality of their print jobs have also improved. That is progress IMHO. |

Thanks for posting the link. There are so many flaws in their approach that I'd think their "market share data" is pretty much useless. One of the first prerequisites for any statistical sampling model intended to reflect trends in a general population is that the sample has to be a valid subset of the general population. Since they fail to establish any basis for that in their model, there is no need to go further. But, it gets worse if one does read further. -- best regards, Neil |

IMHO, Windows 8/8.1 is a turd in the punchbowl. As a business user I will be curious to see if Windows 10 is more appealing. IMHO, Windows 8.x is similar to the popularity of Win 3.1, Win95, and Vista. Each of those altered the way that one worked previously, and also were precursors to the next generations of Windows. In other words, I don't expect any big operational changes between 8.x and 10. -- best regards, Neil |
