XP OEM License Sticker Problem
Hi,
I've just had to replace the base cover of my IBM Thinkpad (the old one had a big crack in it). Does anyone know what I should do about the Windows XP OEM license sticker on the old base cover? It doesn't look to be easily removable. Am I still licensed even though I don't have the sticker on the laptop any more? Thanks, Adam. |

You are still legal but you should keep the old sticker by simply cutting the plastic with a side cutter or some other such tool |

Or lay it on a flatbed scanner and scan it in 600 DPI resolution color. And YES, it is yours for the life of that PC and you don't need it on the pc. Its just easy to do that for users, just like the orange sticker with the key in the retail packages of Windows. And I'll toss one more thing in the fire. I have a sticker with Key XXXXX on it. When I reload with the CD's I get Key YYYYY. So basically the sticker is not right. But the sticker will not work either if I enter it. The OEM CD's I have don't let me put in a key. Its in the CD, automatic. So take that with a bit of salt. I've asked and it seems to be a typical syndrome. I have Dell. |

Get a safety razor blade, the type that has only one edge (the other edge has a folded over metal guard). You can probably get it under at a steep angle (to more likely cut into the old casing rather than into the sticker) to scrape off the sticker. Then use contact cement on both the new case and sticker, let the glue setup on each so they get tacky, and apply to each other to put the old sticker on the new case. |

Stick the case on the scanner and print a copy to glue on your new bottom. Save the real one in the data safe. If MS ever tries to arrest you because of the copied sticker and won't let you out of jail to get the real one, I'm sure they'll be, "sorry for the inconvenience". If you try to cut it off, put some packing tape over it first to hold it together. Remember, they went to GREAT lengths to make it non-removable. In the old days, we had an IT department that thought it was a good idea to put the stickers on the battery. What a mess.... |
