Not necessarily. Much Windows stuff loads before there's an indication on
the screen that Windows is in control. For example, Windows may be trying
a remote boot from a non-existent device.

Before Windows tries anything ntldr must first be loaded and you will
either be presented with a boot menu from the boot.ini file or, if there
is only one operating system present, or if the timeout value in the
boot.ini file is set to 0, ntldr will proceed to load Windows without
presenting a boot menu. In either case the BIOS post screen will be
cleared and you will either see a boot menu or temporarily see a black
screen while ntldr starts to load Windows, if you are still seeing POST
information nothing Windows has yet happened. As a matter of fact if the
BIOS POST screen is still present the boot process hasn't yet even been
passed to the MBR so it will be pretty difficult for Windows to be doing
anything!

You should start your own thread rather than hijacking this one, include as
much info as you can about the problem.

If you have a demonstrated history of making mistakes, absolutely.

Besides, this is Usenet. It's not your typical afternoon tea party

you should find a name to call yourself besides unknown, and be willing to
admit when your wrong, unknown is cowardly. if your advice stinks, then yes.

If it isn't obvious to you where the PC is hanging you not going to
be of any use in the thread.

Sorry if I caused you to nearly itch to death. But some things are obvious:

1. You're a frequent poster/reader of the Daily Kos.

2. You've never started Windows in Safe mode and watched hundreds of things
scroll across the screen before any user-friendly indication that Window's
is in control.

I have no clue what Daily Kos is, and I've booted PC's to safe mode more
times than most have booted their PC's in total, so please go whine
somewhere else.

Thank you Terry for a civilised reply.
The computer is one of several I built from scratch and has been in daily
use for 3years or so.
In retrospect, of course I should have realised it was NOT a Windows problem
and to all those people who have become upset/irate about this I offer my
humble apology. To those who have the time to post insults, I say "get a
life"
Following the useful comments I updated my BIOS with the MSI Live Monitor.
This didn't help.
I will now concentrate on the BIOS area and would appreciate any pointer to
NG or User Group that might be able to help me.
Many thanks again to those who replied constructively.

Hi AT,

The delay into Setup is either hardware or BIOS related.

When you say, "coming out of setup", what are you saying?

Do you see the XP logo and worm for multiple minutes? OR

Is the screen black for multiple minutes BEFORE seeing the XP logo and
worm?

Is your Boot Manager in use? Has it always been or not been? I've seen
that delay on IBM workstations that have network boot enabled, but are not
longer being started that way. You may have some settings in Boot Manager
that are searching for other devices, or related items in the BIOS.
