Toshiba W-7 went dark (running from disc)

That command brought up advice and nothing about the drives, such as "Be carful before using the write command." That's your C: drive. You could attempt to do disktype /dev/sda3 and get it to concentrate on looking at the third partition. Only in the interest of seeing if that partition is a bit more healthy. The idea of doing it that way, is to prevent it from "looking" at sda2. When you do it this way, you're asking for it to examine all three of them (sda1,sda2,sda3). disktype /dev/sda The only thing that matters now, is what you want to do about it. Buy a new drive, reinstall Win7, forget about the old drive contents. Or, try and rescue what's on the old drive. I'm not getting a strong feeling right now that the disk content on the 250GB drive matters. HTH, Paul |

Toshiba W-7 went dark (running from disc)
"Paul" wrote in message news HB wrote: I've read what seems to be hundreds of pages and have not found the answer to getting the Toshiba to boot. This is true. I hope you weren't expecting miracles. I actually meant online, not here on the NG, though I tried to read every post. We go out of our way, to try not to destroy your only chance to repair a computer. I believe that, or wouldn't be here. :^) When ever I'm involved in a computer issue, the first thing I do, is a backup of the sick item. No way to do that now with the Toshiba. There was nothing of real importance on it. Anything important was backed up on a thumbdrive. I'm not an IT guy or a Geek Squad guy. A Geek Squad guy doesn't make a backup of your hard drive. A Geek Squad guy just "goes for it". If CHKDSK trashes the disk, he reinstalls the OS and charges you $200 and says "Done". Professional repair people watch the clock. Their flowchart for repair, is a lot more brutal than ours would be. Don't I know it. Plus they're well known for their coffee and men's room breaks on your dime. One objective of getting you a Win7 DVD disc, is to reinstall the OS, if you cannot make a repair. So there's always a final outcome of needing to reinstall. But before throwing in the towel that way, it would be good to know whether the hard drive is even healthy enough to accept an installation. You might get half way through and have it crash for example. Let me mention that for some reason the Toshiba has always had a problem being "slower" than normal for what's sold these days. That was why my aunt gave it to us. It also took too much time to boot and shut down she said. I had to agree with her. My two oldest avoided using it. She did have it "repaired" somewhere up in TN before she moved but it didn't help. So into the closet it went and she bought herself a new laptop. She offered it to meon a visit and I took it. She had this sneaky and self satisfied look of glee on her face as she handed it over..... Small 2.5" hard drives are available for around $50-$60 or so, .... Yep, I already checked. That's OK. I have a feeling the HD is the problem. Either mechanical or the OS became corrupt somehow. Strangley enough she booted just fine that evening and quit while running. I was on it, not one of the kids. It was running when suddenly it made a kind of ticking sound and the screen went black. -- Microsoft motto "If it ain't broke keep fixing it till it is." |

Can you learn anything from these pics? I have no experience looking at smartctl output from good disks or bad ones. It seems like a good news/ bad news/ situation considering that there is a line saying: SMART overall-health self-assessment test results: PASSED .... but we have all kinds of defective behavior showing up and the nice simple Toshiba recovery wizard doesn't work (yet). You don't have the Toshiba recovery disks which could have been made back when Windows was operational, nor the optional Toshiba drivers disks for your hardware which the intact install could've provided. So, likely the best that you can do with what you have is to install Win7 from available general media and/but I don't know your experience with installing Windows and finding drivers for your hardware if it doesn't happen 'automatically'. You don't have experience using the tools which have been mentioned here such as chkdsk using Windows tools, or testdisk using Win or linux tools, or ddrescue using linux tools and you don't have enough experience using linux to be comfortable pasting information from a linux terminal into a linux news agent to make it easy to communicate back and forth and progress and problems while working in linux. Those who don't like the negative parts of the smartctl would rather see a replacement hdd in there instead of striving to recover this hdd. I'm the type who tries to hold onto old hardware too long. But, you do have some very patient participants here who would like to help. -- Mike Easter |

Do you recall if that ticking sound resembled the sound you heard when you attempted to get into the Toshiba recovery wizard with the zero key power-up strategy? Given what we see good about the hdd, I have to assume that you are hearing something like hdd actuator hitting a stop or back into park position because of a read error like a 'click of death' since a genuine head crash would have much more catastrophic results. -- Mike Easter |

However, your machine cannot find OS files on the HD. Next steps: a) See if Linux can find the HD. If so, the HD is OK, but (most likely) the MBR is bad. A bad MBR can be fixed. b) You need a Linux utility that can fix the MBR. My Linux expertise is rusty, so I'll leave information about that to other people. Perhaps you would care to look there and maybe verify if you think that it looks like your Toshiba. http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptop...a-laptop-1.htm I wouldn't try and attempt something like this unless I could watch someone else do it. Once Linux Puppy is up and running, you should see all the drives it can access. If you don't see a something that looks like a hard drive icon for C:, there may be a way to click through the menus to find it an "mount" it (= make it visible and usable by Puppy). Someone familiar with Puppy should be able to walk you through that. I know nothing about Fatdog/Linux. I don't know where to find anything there. If you can mount the HD, it will show on the desktop as C: or Windows. It can be fixed, but I don't know whether Puppy includes the tools to do that. Otherwise, the HD is beyond fixing IMO. Mount the HD? You're learning a lot, eh? So am I, and I'm also being reminded of holes in my memory. Old age is not for wussies. :-) I guess you can say this is a learning experience. It doesn't look easy and intuitive like the other burners I had. See Patrick's post; Ashampoo _does_ have that choice. As does ImgBurn. In Ashampoo there are 3 choices to burn ISO disks but I don't see the choice to burn them from a saved file. Two are from disk images and one from a project. Which do I use? .. (Though use a write-once one once you've proved the method - IME, CD-RWs aren't _long_ lived, I mean recordings made on them aren't.) I remember reading that in the past. I use my external drive to store images from my two main PCs. You don't boot _from_ the external drive: you boot from a CD you make using the imaging software you choose. I choose Macrium, for which the boot CD actually fits on a mini-CD (well it does for Macrium 5 that I have; I think it will for 6 and 7 too); it hasn't let me down yet. Once Macrium (or whatever) has booted from the CD, you tell it which image file (on the external drive) to restore from. The downloader for Macrium has errors so I can't get that one. Maybe I can get it from another site. -- Microsoft motto "If it ain't broke keep fixing it till it is." |
