Default reg hack for windows start menu

I am not sure the exact section of the start menu I am referring to, but
it's the section under the pinup menu. Everytime you open an application a
new shortcut appears there. And you can pin it on the pin up menu if you
like. I get tired of erasing a bunch of things. So I can ignore this. Or,
if there's a registry entry I can use that someone knows; maybe I can stop
everything from appearing there. Does anyone know anything like that?

The WinXP Start menu has two modes. You can switch to "Classical Mode"
if you want. Try "right-click" the Start menu button, and have a look
at the settings.

The mode you're in right now, might be the default mode, A picture
of it, can be seen here. In the example, the programs that "Nancy"
has recently used, seem to be stuck into the menu just above
"All Programs".

Bill,

I am not sure the exact section of the start menu I am referring to,

That means I can't be sure either ...

Everytime you open an application a new shortcut appears there.

As far as I know only *documents* appear there. And if a shortcut is
already there it just gets updated. Also, there is a limit to the ammount
of shortcuts stored.

So I can ignore this.

Yes.

Or, if there's a registry entry I can use that someone knows; maybe
I can stop everything from appearing there

As far as I know, there is none. You can remove the section in the start
menu though. Can't remember how I did it, so you have to google it
yourself. (if you find thow to *block* it than please do post back).

Regards,
Rudy Wieser

I'm coming into this thread a bit late, but if you are looking for a way to
automatically clear the recent documents shortcuts list, here is the
solution:

Create a text file named "Clear Recent Docs.txt" (for example), and paste in
the following (using a pure text editor like Notepad), and then rename it to
"Clear Recent Docs.reg" and double click it to enter it into ther registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000091
"CDRAutoRun"=hex:00,00,00,00
"ClearRecentDocsOnExit"=dword:00000001

I've been using this for quite awhile, as I got tired of seeing that recent
documents list all the time. After rebooting, it automatically gets cleared.

Hum...Ok thanks Bill I entered the text into notepad and saved as
"rdoc.reg" and notepad saved a regdit file. I loaded and rebooted twice
those entries are still there. Everything I've open and it can sometimes be
a long list. It is a pain to erase every one.

I noticed I had updated mine a bit and the complete one was as follows. If
this doesn't do it, I don't know what else to suggest. Again, this is for
cleaning out the recents document list (which I found to be annoying) for
Windows XP. (As always, it's always a good idea to save the original one).

OK it looks like it's not going to work. Thanks though. I have several XP
registry hacks though in my registry that *do* work. So I guess I never know
until I try.

I should have clarified that I'm using WinXP SP3, 32 bit. So maybe that's
the reason. I'm also using the classic start menu, but I doubt if that's
it.

Thanks again for the correction, and I hope it's not a problem for the other
Bill that I added those in, as I found them useful. So Bill C, if you don't
want the added stuff, hopefully you saved the original before adding this to
the registry and can go back.

Rudy - I think that change in sorting order came stock with XP and later,
but since I was so used to the regular logical (ASCII) character sort order
for files, it drove me nuts. But now I can't even remember what the
disadvantage of not using logical character sort order was (the way it is
now in Vista and above). Well I found one example using these file names:

Picture
Picture - Copy
Picture - Copy 2
Picture - Copy 3

which apparently gets sorted "incorrectly" using the newer method in Windows
7 and later) as follows:

Install CCleaner freeware

https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

Click on "builds" at the bottom of the page, and download
"CCleaner - Slim", which has no adware.
After it's installed, right click on Trash and choose what you
want it to clear. In your case, it will be Windows Explorer ---
Recent Documents.
Once it's configured, all you need to do it right click Trash,
and "Run CCleaner".
Once you get used to it, it'll only take a couple of seconds.

Same here. Could not visually scan a folder (in XP) for a certain file
anymore, as the sought-for one could pop up in unexpected locations. Drove
me (sort of) mad. :-\

But even with that setting a folder seems to be sorted with all
non-alphanumeric symbols infront of alphanumeric ones (try a filename
starting with a "{" or "}" and you'll see what I mean).

P.s.
The other two registry entries are not bad either (understatement). :-)
