Does it make sense to disable updates until the 1709 thing settles
down?

THe only way to stop a 3 gig update is to change to a metered
connection. I only have had a problem on 1 of 3 computers so it can't
be too bad.

And since there are millions of people using windows 10, and only a few
on the boards complaining, it's probable that most upgrades work. I
will grant though that there are not millions of people being delivered
the upgrade yet nor are there millions on the boards.

My upgrade went great. Took time but worked great.

Trying to disable the update is not necessary. I have updated my
laptop, and ran it for a day. I then updated my wife desktop, as I
found no problems with the update.

The only thing I noticed different from before I updated, was a slight
change in the color setting on my monitor which was easily resolved.
Actually, to resolve the color problem took less time that trying to
disable and prevent the update.

Like previous updates, plan on not using your computer for the several
hours that it takes for the update. Since there is no user input, you
do not have to stick around to monitor it.

Personally I think many of the problems that people are having, to me,
seem to be somewhat minor. I installed 1709 update, and then checked
for the computer vendor's updates.

How broken is your OS ?

Are there things you failed to fix long
ago, that are going to prevent it from working ?

Does your Windows Update actually work ?

*******

1) I backed up the boot drive first

2) I ran Windows Update,
"No update for you"

3) I went to the WindowsUpgrade folder on my desktop,
and running it said "You have the latest OS".
Winver said I was using 15063.

4) I expect to have trouble with video drivers, but I do
have a driver file if one is needed.

I installed 1709 on my Release system, by using a
downloaded DVD. 3,809,476,608 bytes. Ran Setup.exe off
the DVD image (I just mount the ISO in file explorer and
don't bother burning a DVD). No problems so far
after the reboot.

*******

I have a VM, and it took almost eight hours for
the process to complete.

*******

Neither OS was intensely customized.

I didn't try to delete my Program Files folder.

I didn't redirect my home directory or Program Files
to my D: drive.

The more goofy stuff you do, the higher the risk factor.
But a backup takes care of that.

No matter when you do it, it's still risky. There could
be a bug in it, designed just for you.

How about this?

Step-1 Press WINDOWS key+R to open dialog box RUN.
Step-2 Type services.msc in box and hit OK.
Step-3 Select 'windows update' from the list of items.
Step-4 Double click on this. It will open settings of windows 10 updates.
Step-5 Select 'Disabled' from the drop down menu. Then click apply and OK.

Did you download and install manually?

No, I went to the Settings, Update & Security, Update Windows, Check
for updates. I then let Windows do the rest, download and install the
update.

Can you describe what you did to resolve this. I have a friend who
describes a similar problem (although he doesn't call his 'slight')
after he updated his PC. I have updated two of my PCs without any
problem and I haven't had to adjust color settings for many years.

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure, as I don't keep a log of all of the changes I make
(sometimes Unfortunately)

I have an Intel i7cpu with corresponding display chip. I believe I
went into the HD Graphics Control Panel and tweaked the Color Setting
for the Display

Thanks, Keith. This was the first time in many years that I have had
to adjust any monitor - and then only one out of my three monitors;
the other two remained the same as they have always been. This
problem only showed up after the Fall Update so it maybe a driver
problem or an excuse for buying another 27" monitor!

I suspect that it is a monitor problem, and you "need" a new 27"
monitor. ;-)

We have 24" on my older HP computer, color beats my laptop any day.
