Default Windows XP shows Blank Screens on 30% of Applications, what'smissing?

Hi,

My PC came with Windows XP installed but after a few years I had it
lock up on me. So I used my Windows XP Home Edition CD to unlock my PC
problem. Now Adobe Reader 8, Symantex's SystemWorks, HP Director and
several
other applications don't work; ie. they just show blank screens. It
sounds like Java or some other common routine is missing. Found
MSJAVA.dll missing so moved it into windows/system32 and tried to
register it ... not sure it worked. But of no help.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Phil

The OP did not say what sort of system CD was used or
how (e.g. Repair or Reinstal.) This behavior may be normal
if the CD was programmed to put the (preinstalled) PC back
into factory condition -- i.e. the OP may have lost DLLs or
other recent components of the apps listed. (He may also
need to reinstal Service Packs 2 and/or 3.)

Who are you addressing? The assembled throng? :-)

Sorry, it's a confusing style, replying to someone in the third person!

What's OP? I selected a 'new' install from the CD list of options.
Then reinstalled service pack 3. Does service pack 1 and 2 need
installing too?

Installing SP3 in structions:

After reinstalling my PC has service pack 2 on it and PC has the
problem. So service pack 3 is not the answer. (I did it to be sure and
reinstalled back to SP2.)

The problem starts on installation, XP setup seems to freeze on
'final' setup. Final setup shows a (DOS) screen saying 'please wait'.
I did for 45 HOURS!!! and the aborted setup. Setup ask if updating s/w
on install yes or no. Tried both and both seemed to freeze ... ie. no
response for over 4 hours ... the 1st time was for 45 hours. So setup
is at the heart of my problems. Ideas how to get this setup to work?
