Two Problems since installing SP2
Since installing SP2 a month or so ago all has been fine with a couple of
exceptions. 1) My newsreader (Outlook2000 which uses OE I believe) used to delete all downloaded messages and headers after 10 days, which is the way I have always had it set. After SP2 this no longer happens unless I open OE independently and this now deletes message bodies but leaves the headers. I can see no change in the settings. Is there a cure for this? 2) The system used to create an automatic system restore point every few days but this no longer happens unless I do something (like install a new program) or create one manually. Is this usual? How can I get it to perform as it did before? I can see no change in the previous settings. Many thanks for any information received. -- Smeagol |

Hi,
There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently that may help us diagnosing the problem. Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter. Click on System in the left pane. Click the gray title “Source” at the top of the source name column in the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice". Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two event here. How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs? http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#EventViewer System Restore fails to create an automatic restore point: http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srauto.html -- Regards, Bert Kinney MS-MVP Shell/User http://bertk.mvps.org §meagol wrote: Since installing SP2 a month or so ago all has been fine with a couple of exceptions. 1) My newsreader (Outlook2000 which uses OE I believe) used to delete all downloaded messages and headers after 10 days, which is the way I have always had it set. The only listings under "s" are "Service Control Manager" Where do we go from here? Thanks. -- Smeagol |

I would suggest going through the steps on the following page, skipping the steps you have
already performed. System Restore fails to create an automatic restore point. http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srauto.html -- Regards, Bert Kinney MS-MVP Shell/User http://bertk.mvps.org §meagol wrote: "Bert Kinney" wrote in message ... To follow on from my previous posting ...
Looking at your most excellent web pages I checked to se if Task Scheduler was running. For some reason it was set to manual. I have now re-set this to automatic following your instructions. As I have a Compaq computer I have also taken your advice to turn off the system monitoring for the system partition and also set my external hard drive monitoring off (used purely for back-up purposes and not always connected). Might this solve the problems? Thanks again. -- Smeagol |

As I have a Compaq computer I have also taken your advice to turn off the system monitoring for the system partition and also set my external hard drive monitoring off (used purely for back-up purposes and not always connected). To clarify, you are referring to the Restore Partition when you say System Partition? Might this solve the problems? Just keep an eye on System Restore to make sure it's creating 'System Checkpoints' on a daily basis. Thanks again. -- Regards, Bert Kinney MS-MVP Shell/User http://bertk.mvps.org |

To clarify, you are referring to the Restore Partition when you say System Partition? I think we are referring to the same thing here - I hope! What you call the Restore Partition (correct terminology I am sure) is the small partition which holds the original operating system files along with additional software that was supplied with the computer from new and the whole system (or part) can be restored from this partition should it become necessary. So far I have never had to do this. Thanks again. -- Smeagol |

Yes, that's what I was referring to. It should not be monitored by System Restore.
