Default About Windows 8 (10) license (transferable license)

I have Win XP but looking forward buying Windows 10. Would like to buy
the new computer now, so was planning to first buy Win8.1 and then
upgrade it to 10. I hope its free? I read it would/could be...

But, my question is that what kind of license I need to be able to
transfer the Windows 8/10 from one computer to another (unlimited
times)? If my computer dies totally and I have a totally new computer, I
want to transfer the Windoes there obviously. Is the cheapest license
(like non-oem... full version) able to do that? Where can I find
information about the license policy? I never find it when I read the
specs from shops, which I am bit disappointed. Its so difficult to find
it that I have to write on forums etc or call to Microsoft. Anyway, does
anybody know about this?

I guess its also allowed to have multiple copies on one computer if I am
the only user. Like I would like to run Windows 10 on my PC and then at
the same time on Virtual Box... so 2 instances of Windows running for me
at the same time. Is this allowed? Would be funny if its not allowed .
But how is it? And yes, last time I asked about this on a phone from
Microsoft (6 years ago), they said I have to buy 10 licenses if I have
10 copies of Windows on my own one and only PC which I use (although am
not sure if Microsoft would have won a court case against me if they
found out I was doing it). Lol.... I hope this kind of stuff is not
there anymore.

Sorry for that rant, and thank you whoever can answer this

Also would be nice to see a link to the license policy to check it.

You can get a full version.

"Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - Full Version (32 & 64-bit)"

A VM is treated like a real, separate computer.

I thought at one time, there was a web page on the Microsoft site
that served up licensing agreements. But I can't find it now.

Thanks.

Really? wow....
That is definitely not common sense x. Where is the logic there?? If I
was selling my programs (am also a programmer), I would not mind one
person having 100 copies running on their computer if they just bought
one license. I would not even think about charging them 100 x £100.

I understand somebody using 100 separate shoes needs to pay all shoes,
but that is a different issue as each shoe costs .... but 100 Windows
programs do not cost any more than 1.

Anybody knows the logic behind this.. if I run 100 windowses on one
machine I have to pay £10 000? Everybody also knows that me running 100
windows on one machine slows down the computer, so its not even the same
as running only 1.

I thought at one time, there was a web page on the Microsoft site
that served up licensing agreements. But I can't find it now.

Paul

That should be clearly and easily somewhere, preferable at the front
page where MIcrosoft advertices them (a link at least). Its an important
issue.

and now that Windows 10 included itself a VM it makes even less sense to
say that one cannot run multiple instances.

Win10 upgrade from Win8 will most likely be one license for use solely
on that computer (i.e. no transferability).

If you need transferability (instal on one pc, remove from that same pc,
then install on another) then you should probably plan on buying the
retail version which will be only available as full version ware
(upgrade-ware o/s ceased as of Windows 8.1. Windows 8.0 was the last
upgrade-ware o/s from MSFT).
- Note: it would be wise to wait and see since it is entirely possible
that Win10 in any form will not be transferable since MSFT has already
stated it will be supported when installed for the the
life-of-device...not necessarily use of the same license on any other
device!

And always recognize that MSFT licenses the software for use and all
licenses are for a single device (e.g. on a hard drive or VM, but not
both at the same time)

Thanks for the info. Good to know.
I still think its a bit sad its like that.... because it just makes
peoples life difficult...its much easier to operate having them in both
at the same time, and the thing is that not everybody has the money to
buy many licenses even if they wanted (to people who say "well, then why
dont you buy 5 licenses...?"). Not everybody is rich. Many people are
actually poor, like students/young people. So its kind of making peoples
life jjust difficult. But its not your fault.. . Just saying...

And its also not really logical: Windows is a certain kind of program (a
program which does not need operating system, but a program anyway)... a
very complex one. But for example Word or Visual Studio is also a
program. Can I run multiple copies of Visual Studio or Word at the same
time? Yes i can! I can open 10 Word documents and I dont think Microsoft
is against it. So why cannot I open 10 Windows 8.1 also the same way ??
There you go... If somebody has a good explanation why 10 Words can be
run at the same time but 10 Win8.1 cannot, am interested to know. I mean
what is logically speaking different there. I dont see any difference.

Yes, if you have a different license for each one. No, if it's a

not everybody is rich.... I am one of those. Am struggling to buy even
one license. Well, LInux is free... so nobody is forcing me to buy Win10
though...

What am saying is that this makes peoples life difficult. I cannot
afford to buy multiple licenses.. but i need to have multiple copies of
my operating system definitely (like multiple backup copies in a case i
get virus and need to get back a virgin copy). Also I need to run VM *on
top of my other operating system*. Does not make sense running Linux and
then Win10 on VM. I would like to use the same operating system on both.

If I am going to folllow 100% that Microsoft rule, that might mean I
have to think about not buying Win10 but rather start learning Linux.
And that would mean Microsoft also would lose my money, plus possible
other windows softwares I was planning to buy, like Visual Studio.

Not sure what you mean. But I meant that if I buy 100 shoes, then it
costs to the manufacturer to create all those shoes. It might cost £10
to the manufacturer to make one pair of shoes. So it is logical that if
I buy 3 shoes instead of 1 shoes I should pay 3 times more money. But it
does not cost anything to Microsoft if I install one extra Windows on my
computer. It costs £0 to them. Because bytes are free! Microsoft does
not need to pay anything for me to install an extra Windows.

Since that is what MS does, you will no doubt have to learn to accept
it.

I see that Avast is using you as an advertising billboard, partly by
using an incorrect sig delimiter. Did you know that there is in Avast a
configuration item to turn that off?
