system reporting stuff to Microsoft. Then they have you look at normal
stuff you don't understand in order to get you to pay them $$$ to
"fix" what is not broken. They might also install back doors and

I've had the India calls in the past, where they knew some of the basics,
but where they said something like "your system is reporting errors", and
then to prove it, they told me to look in the Event Log, and said "look at
all those errors!".

Then, of course, they told me to run a remote windowing software, and to
give them the number, and at that time, they passed me to another guy (who
spoke a completely different accent, maybe Russian???), to finish me off.

Little do they know I recorded the whole conversation and published it
here, where it was amazing how angry they got when they finally figured
out, after about 20 or 30 minutes, I was on to them from the start.

Thanks. I had forgotten about those as those "Indian Microsoft Support"
scam calls suddenly stopped.

What I don't get is how ANGRY they get when they're the ones trying to pull

a. Maybe that's just how people are in India proper? (dunno)
b. Maybe they're people selected who want to "clinch the deal"?
c. Maybe they're being paid by the victim, so they lost money?

Dunno. But, as in your case, they were really vicious, even as I, like you,
played dumb for most of the beginning (I was dual booted to Linux at the
time, so I was also trying to guess what the results should have been when
they walked me through the steps).

The vitriol was three things:
a. Aimed at my own family (like how I would think the mafia works)
b. Sexually charged against the females of my family
c. Seemingly out of place given I wasn't the one who called them

It was shocking, not for the fact I was worried; but for the fact that I
wondered ever since what kind of person is like them.

So it's good to know your guy _also_ spewed hateful vitriol, as if I was
trying to scam someone, I'd just cut my losses and hang up instead of
wasting minutes spewing sexually charged threats against someone's family.

When they start the call and say the thing about M$ support, I explode
into a laugh, which leaves them bewildered; then I hang or they hang. I
don't bother to argue with them.

I don't even bother to tell them I'm running Linux, so I know their
claims are false :-D

The funny thing is that they are calling Spain. If I answer in Spanish
they ask if I talk English. I suspect they are using the phone number
list, where they may see that my surname is English, and that they are
going after expats here.

The chaps that make the calling are possibly hired for a job on
commission. If you play them, they are of course loosing money, so they
get angry at you. They could get fired, too. After all, they need food,
as everybody.

250M Customer Service Records is a LOT. Imagine what the
scammers will do with that.
"Hello, this is M$ Support. Mr. John Doe, Date of birth xxx,
social security number xxx, credit card number xxx, address xxx, Win X
serial number xxx, (or whatever leaked) we have detected malware on
your computer. Please open a remote desktop session so we can correct
the problem".
Hope the leak made the headlines non-tech people read.

It is a gentle, respectful clap. And yes, it's the sort of reserved
response that is used to not distract the other golfers on the course.

In this case, I meant "Well done, man." Respectful and reserved is the
thing I was going for. Not enough of it these days.
