Default DesktopX, Windows Blinds froze XP

I installed Windows Blinds premium not knowing the features were locked
although it practically mirrors the free version. Anyway after trying to
apply a theme and the program froze I uninstalled it and apllied the free
version and when I applied a theme Winblinds froze again . I unloaded the
theme and reapplied a windowsXP native theme but after Restart It took 15
minutes for logon. Icons, taskbar and windows remain frozen, active X and
soundcard are disabled.

I uninstalled the app and did a system restore (resulted as "incomplete"
past the date I deleted the program).
Im at a loss. this site helps explain how it works but im a chef not a coder

I would appreciate any help (....other than some dillhole telling me not
install third party tweaks)

Install Third-Party Rinky-Dink tweaks and "enhancements" and pay the price
of frequent incompatibility with XP and non-functioning computers.

Why should Microsoft design the OS so all these little fly-by-night
companies can get a free ride and be a parasite on the Operating System --
ripping off potential profits for MS as well as ham-stringing the OS with
shabby, shoddy code?

I LOVE to see it when these pogues get hoisted with their own petards and
wind up with BSOD or frozen screens.

The Wages Of Sin & Arrant Foolishness...

PUT the New Features IN the OS.

Further:

If you screwed the pooch and went ahead and put one of these Third Party
timebombs on your system -- DON'T come crying to Microsoft. GO to the site
of the people who sold you the software and get THEM to tell you what's
WRONG.

Heh, Heh -- Fat Chance Of That. They don't want to get into the Technical

fly-by-night profits they hope to rip off -- as Freeriders on Microsoft

Hence why I said some 'Dillhole response'....D spencer, you cut and paste
your responses like a Kindergarden Arts and Crafts Master . I can only assume
you are as spontaeneous as you are attractive to the opposite sex.
Thank you for your witty response.

Spencer although you do speak some truth your still a HUMP and your punk
references are a pop music footnote. If you cant offer real help stick to
enchancing your own porn distibution machine.

besides you were alredy agued by amany and I think they proved you wrong:

Technical Computer Masturbators [TCM's]
Tim Bird
Why use an application like
Outlook to do scheduling and email, etc when you can have these tools built
into the desktop and available all the time? Perhaps some of the TCM's are
innovators and will come up with new ways of using their PC?

For some people - myself included - that's actually fun. It's a break from
using a PC as a workhorse in the daily life. I like the idea of seeing if I
can do something different with my PC - make it look different

DW Wote:

Brush your hair? Maybe stick a daisy in a vase and decorate your table?

I work on a computer. I have written several books and am in the midst of a
third, but Ii like fooling around with the interface and I further like to
see something a little unique--I don't necessarily want my computer to look
lthe same as every pasty face, grey suited clone of Bill Gates.

Sure it's fooly and time wasting--twiddle, futz and tweak, so is combing
your hair...or tending roses--and certainly of no significant value...but so
what? We don't need a bunch of politicaly correct, self-righteous nazis
telling us how to decorate our houses either.

Besides, games are fooly and time wasting and yet Micro$oft DID put them in
the OS!!! And more than one. Why do you suppose that is? BECAUSE games are
fun! And if computers are fun, more people will buy them. Just like themes

Another Good Argument for NOT proliferating rinky-dink, 3rd Party add-ons
and screw-ins from fly-by-night vendors in XP or Vista [when we have it].

IF it's a worthwhile feature for consumers...

PUT IT IN THE OS...

Where it can be properly INTEGRATED By MICROSOFT.

Brand,

Seriously, I don't think you can install the premium version of WindowBlinds
without paying for it. And if you do pay for it, those features won't (or
shouldn't) be locked. I'm not going to judge one way or the other but if you
got a "hacked" or "cracked" version...there are known and major problems
with them and some of the problems you are describing sound awfully
familiar.

Also, I know that you should not install one version over the other. In
fact, you should completely uninstall the trial version before you install
the paid version.

Best bet...and I hate to see someone disappointed when the program they are
disappointed with really is pretty mature and pretty good...is to record
your problems carefully and take them to Stardock.com. If you paid for the
premium version you can get one-on-one support. If you can't or don't want
to go that route, there are some very good folks on the forums there. Neil
Banfield in particular.

I have had some minor quibbles with some of the skins I have downloaded...my
favourite has a small bug in it that prevents titlebar text with the trial
version--although other skins by the same author work fine--but no real
problems with WindowBlinds itself. I keep and run a pretty tight ship
here...always do a restore point before installing new software, regularly
run AV and spyware proggies and defragment every week. Maybe that's why I
don't have any complaints but it also tells you that if anything were amiss
I'd probably be mad as hell and complaining loudly.

Here's my setup so maybe that makes a difference too. ..

AMD x2 4400
2gig OCZ Platinum ram
nvida GeForce 7800 gtx v.81.98
Windows XP pro sp2

As for DSH..he's dry tinder looking for a spark...don't let him get to ya.

DWAs for DSH..he's dry tinder looking for a spark...don't let him get to ya.
lol....He's going to ingnite himself oneday. But he did get to me...I feel
bad now but I hate ignorance in the moment.

I thank you for your fairness, I still spend $100 a month on CD's, buy
software mainly from the shop and avoid problems (although to be honest I
have pirated a few things in the past).
I was under the impression that I could download it but you couldn't use it
until you register..that's what I got from it considering you have to
register at the website (which moniters how many times you attempt
registration, I FAQued why it wouldn't load). DSH's comments make a bit more
sense now. I downloaded the premium from a friend (not stardock, thats where
i picked up the free one) but I uninstalled the premium before installing the
freebie. The README file that was packaged with "windows blinds Premium 5"
is gibberish with the word crack. I should've read it. Dumb. It is a good app
and I'd still reccommend it becuase I really liked it for the 5 minutes it
worked plus I would buy it if my computer worked..I'm going to spend about
$500 this week upgrading hardware and $400 on software in the near future
(Canadian dollars that is) OR buy a G5 and sell this heap If I have to do a
clean install so I'm no stranger to the marketplace. After all I'm a chef -
how many people know how to cook for themselves but still want a night out?

your set up is kinda different ...

I forget some versions and I can't browse them right now but my setup is:
Creative SB! sound device (2003ish)
Pentium Intel 1.6 Ghz (beeps constantly)
256 Rambus (one reason for upgrade + motherboard)
Nvida GeForce 500 something something (old but content, never had a problem)
Windows XP home sp2
Ie7 beta (hardly used because of this)

"brand dub" is certainly one of the World's Leading Experts on Ignorance.

Windows XP SP2 on a box with only 256 MB of RAM and he wonders why he is
having all sorts of troubles.

Then, to compound his difficulties, he straps on all sorts of crapware that
was never intended to be part of the OS -- and he wonders why it won't RUN.

Stay tuned, this fellow gives Good Value-Added -- In ENTERTAINMENT.

Paid version? If yes, have you sent an email to Stardock's tech support
yet? If you get an automated reply, follow up with a second email. I don't
know why getting support rolling is a two email deal but it is. Guessing
it's because their employees are active in their newsgroups.

I've been using Windows Blinds (as part of the DesktopX suite) for a couple
of years now. The few problems that I've had were from "bad" themes that I
tried. Fix: Apply a different theme (and dump the bad one). I've only run
into one or two themes that didn't work quite right but feel that's a small
percentage of the many that I've tried

Also, check their servers for a newer version. If a problem crops up in a
particular version of their software, they're very quick in fixing it.

Brand,

Truth to tell, it seems to me that you have two problems that need to be
addressed before you can even hope for a solution...the cracked version of
Windowblinds, and your system.

Honestly, I don't think your system is up to it. I haven't run Intel
processors for six or seven years now but it strikes me that if your system
is beeping at you, something is seriously wrong. That needs to be addressed
first.

After that, more ram would help. Once you either replace or upgrade your MB
and ram, a clean install (or re-install) of WinXP is in order....perhaps
even a full format of your C drive (if you have more than one partition).

And be careful with software that comes from...shall we say "suspect"
sources. It's always a risk and there are enough people out there who
deliberately sabotage cracks or encode a "back door" so that they can mess
with your system, that it's probably wise not to fool with cracked software
at all...even if it comes from a friend.

One final comment in passing...it is no sin to be ignorant. We are
all...every single one of us...totally ignorant about something....and
ignorant about any and everything, to some degree. Ignorance is just a lack
of knowlege and is easily corrected.

When you wake up in the morning, Brand...after having read this
forum...looking for knowlege and answers...you'll be less ignorant. That's
all anyone can ask of life.

DSH, on the other hand, will still be a scrub come morning light...having
learned nothing about anything, much less how to be a decent human
being...and further steeping himself in the kind of behaviour that makes it
all too apparant what an ass he is.

Thank you for your help Sharon,

'D.W.' pointed out the version I downloaded was a faulty crack, the Stardock
forum is full of suckers like me who unexpectedly or 'enexpectedly'
downloaded the wrong one...there is something to be said about getting what
you want from the source. I honestly didn't know it was the hacked version
but I'm not looking for sympathy just a confident word I won't need to do a
clean install.

I sent an email to Stardock support but I also back up my registries every
now and then so I will uninstall and deltele every instance of stardock,
restore pre winblinds 5 (WB5) reggies and reboot. Would this be wise? WB5
changes the GUI and sits pretty close to the OS so I don't want to make it
worse.

One more question..some applications auto LOG their install, how can I setup
to LOG every installations' directories in full? thanks for your

I installed Windows Blinds premium not knowing the features were locked

apply a theme and the program froze I uninstalled it and apllied the free
version and when I applied a theme Winblinds froze again .
