Pentium 2 upgrade to AMD Athlon 3000 processor (Socket 754)

I have one Dell Precision 410 (Pentium 2 @ 400MHz) (http://

As long as your new board is the same form factor as your old one
and not too large for the case you should be fine...
though you may also need a new powersupply.

BTW: If there is any data on the machine you need to keep...be sure to back
it up.

Though repair installs usually work when changing hardware...the change you
propose
is sufficient justify a clean install from the very start

The existing motherboard is a bit irregular looking.

Would the new board fit, when the old one doesn't look standard ?
A microATX motherboard is max 9.6"x9.6" square, to give you some idea
how much space is needed.

The I/O Plate area looks bigger in this picture, than your new
board. New motherboards come with a snap-in plate, intended for
a standard sized hole.

The Dell front panel wiring might not be the same either. The power supply
looks like it might be ATX, but I don't have a way to verify that
from here. The cooling on the Dell box, may not align and work well
with the new motherboard and CPU position. The power supply location,
may get in the way of the CPU cooler.

What you're doing, is a mechanical engineering project in 3D. You have
to think through where everything will fit, and decide whether it is
worth it or not. Perhaps a local computer recycling place, could provide
an ATX mini tower at a reasonable price, something that strictly follows the
ATX standard. A mini-tower would likely be compatible with a full ATX
(12" x 9.6") or a microATX (9.6" x 9.6") board (they share a subset of
mounting hole locations). I'd pick up a power supply, separately. Some
power supply brand info, is available here (Tier 5 are the ones to
avoid).

Also keep in mind that your Dell recovery disks will likely no longer work,
so once you install the new hardware, your system will blue screen and will
not boot, and you'll have no way to fix the problem.

My experience of fitting none Dell mobo's in a Dell case required
modification of the case (pliers & snips)

It's hard to tell by just looking at pictures on-line but that case looks
fairly
large, so the mobo will probably fit OK

Only rarely do I need to use my nibbling tool.

Usually when I am low on cases and have to put an ATX mobo
into an old AT case...
but I have to be pretty desperate to do that!!!

Why ask HERE? What processor you choose is purely a personal
preference and has NOTHING to do with the OS.

Did very similar over Easter with Dell Dim T4100.

Hardest bit was getting MOBO rear plate into Dell hole at back. Had to bend
the lip in case that was facing inwards to be outwards/ upwards to get mobo
to fit flush and allow USBs to be accessible. Dell fan and housing was bit of
a struggle to relocate but care and patience!

Will need a new power supply with 12V ATX probably

Need to install original spacers carefully else mobo bit bendy.

I reused the original Dell switch by purchasing a 2x5 Dil IDC Socket JB59P

Works brilliantly cf orig 700MHz basically a piece of cake - was
simultaneously doing same with a Compaq case and that was a little easier -
no bending case

Dell recovery will NOT work without a Dell mobo. I uised another Dell to do
a WIN98 recovery then moved HD to new mobo and case and then upgraded it to XP
