Win8 not MS only flop

VanguardLH typed: Yeah, I know, in a Windows 8 newsgroup this probably amounts to heresy. While I have to learn (for testing and support) and sometimes have to use Windows 8, it won't be my personal choice on my own computers. I remember an old rule from the 70's and 80's that stated you don't pick the OS first. As you pick the applications that you want to run and then pick the OS that will run them. I don't know why many today just doesn't have a clue. As it is still so true today. I still run Windows 98, 2000, XP, 7, and 8. And most of the time it doesn't matter much to me except when I want to run a certain application that won't run on all of them. Oddly enough, XP remains to be able run more of my apps than any other OS. OS themselves are just not that exciting to me. After all, there has been lots of great OS before, but many of them turned out to be worthless without any killer apps to go along with them. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz - 4GB - Windows XP SP2 |

The problem thereafter is your criteria may change which means you might have to change the OS. Nowadays a lot of my work could be done on *NIX or Windows but there is also the number of offerings within your criteria that is vastly different between these OS platforms. You might find half a dozen apps that will meet or sufficiently satisfy your criteria on *NIX but on Windows there could be dozens of such apps. You have more choice regarding end-user apps on Windows than *NIX (and is also true of Mac). Still, there are now enough good apps on *NIX platforms that will do the majority of my work. When it comes to games, though, I would still need a Windows platform (and not an emulated one). It's not choosing tasks and then finding the apps on the best OS platform. It's also about level of support, apps being actively maintained, and having lots of choices. When you want a file server and that is it's only purpose then, yes, listing criteria, finding apps that work best on which OS platform is wiser. For end-user hosts that run all sorts of apps, the OS choice gets a bit messier. Most users won't bounce between OSes. I do that at work but I won't at home. |

I couldn't find a free version of Softmaker Office Suite on their web site. Later I did an online search on "Softmaker office free" and found their independent www.freeoffice.com site. That is free. So now I'll have to find some comparative reviews between Kingsoft Office Suite Free and Softmaker FreeOffice. Thanks for the heads up on the alternative. The review at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2419014,00.asp may be helpful. |
