home network

My computer crashed some time ago and since then I have been unable to link
my desktop and laptop computers with my network; they did connect
beforehand.
I cannot set up a home group despite both using windows 7 as ipv6 (I think)
is not available, can only use ipv4 (might be wrong words but 6 is not an
option).
My problem is that the desktop and laptop recognise each other on the
network but I cannot find a password that will enable them to share files
etc,.
When I open the Network and Security Centre I am asked to enter the password
to make the connection. I have tried the password for the router but that
does not work, I have also tried the password that was previously used for
the workgroup but that does not work either.
Does anyone know where I can find the "network password" that will allow the
network to function?

Do a Google search for "network password" you'll be amazed at what you
can find.

Thank you for the advice.
I have now tried changing the "Advanced sharing setting" to include "turn on
network discovery" but despite selecting and saving the next time I check it
has reverted to "turn off".
That may be my problem.

One trick is to have an account with the same name and password on each
computer. So there is an account X with password 1234 on computer 1, and
there is an account X with password 1234 on computer 2. And so on.

I do that with some success. BTW, I made those accounts Standard User,
not Administrator, accounts. And also, they are in addition to the real
accounts. They are never used, except in some mysterious way by the
networking applications.

Network discovery or SSDP, helps add a few icons indicating other
devices on your LAN. In the overall scheme of things, it doesn't
really help make things work.

Based on your description, "Ken1943" has a suggestion. The HomeGroup password.
Since you've tried all the other passwords, there was bound to be one more :-)

Thanks all; I am not making much progress so have decided to leave it until
my son (he is an expert) comes when he can sort it out for me.
Meantime I can now access "all user" accounts from one computer to the
other so to use the printer I can copy and paste into "all user" on the
laptop and print from there via the desktop.
Likewise i can transfer files into "all user" and then paste but of course
that is tedious and no quicker than copying to my external hard drive and
pasting from there.
