Hooray! Some common sense about NI!

I see them as mediators in Nth Ireland (at least these days).

We've been that since 1969! (Well mostly)
Interestingly, most of the IRA funding came (comes?) from misguided and
ignorant Americans.

Well David,
no one can say you sit on a fence over these controversial issues and I can
respect you for that, but I'm diametricly opposite you on every other thing
you have said. One thing that seperates humans from other animals is our
compassion for others. If you had ever seen someone with 3rd degree burns
you would feel physically sick-no matter how hard you pretend to be. People
hurt yesterday lost eyes, arms and legs and many had their lungs burned with
toxic smoke. They will face in many cases years of pain and surgury. Their
former lives are over and as many open their eyes in hospital this morning
many will wish they hadn't survived. These were not soldiers, they waged war
on nobody and to me they are heroes. We live under a system, it is not
perfect but give me what we have any day in preference to the closed,
intollerent, brutal, merciless society wanted by Usama Bin-Laden which you
appear to support.

Usenet is a rough and tumble place. You need a thick skin. It is
discouraging reading some of the rude, obnoxious posts but there are
enough useful posts to make the msnews server a good resource. Personally
I get a lot of good troubleshooting tips on here so I don't mind giving
back a bit of help despite the flack from some of the regulars who seem
to do little but call down anyone who doesn't agree with their notion of
how computers or the English language work.

Kerry

Hi Kerry,
thanks for what you have said. I've grown a thicker skin overnight and
have decided to stick around. Anyone who doesn't like that then TOUGH
When I post I tend to address what I say by name to the person having the
problem and I must confess I don't give much thought to people casually
reading the posts and that is probably a mistake, so I'll give a little
synopsis of the thread as is the convention.

It is a little sad that this thread has attracted more posts than any I
have ever been involved in. Some people were distinctly unpleasant
yesterday and it is a little alarming weirdos' like that are out
there-they really should get a life-computers are for business and
entertainment, they are not a replacement for a normal life and obcessives
like David Candy and NoNoBadDog! should get themselves real world
relationships assumming anyone is tasteless enough to have them.

Thanks again Kerry

Chelsea

Glad you decided to stick around. There are many usenet zealots who like
nothing better than to flame someone who posts in a manner they don't like.
I've seen arguments rage on for days over top posting vs bottom posting.
It's hilarious to watch. Wait until you accidently upset some of the Linux
fanatics on here. That's fun. Sometimes on a boring Sunday morning I admit
to doing it on purpose :-)

And yes, it is discouraging to learn that when we freely give of our time
& effort in trying to help someone with their problem, we frequently never
hear from that person again. No thank you. No indication whether our
information helped or hindered. Nothing.

But it's got to be a labor of love for us, no? The remuneration certainly
stinks. So we derive some degree of inner satisfaction in helping (or
trying to help) others, particularly when we think of the frustrations we
faced when we first got into this personal computing business.

And certainly don't let those rude/obnoxious people drive you out. After
all, they're nothing more than a tiny minority and as such, little more
than pin-pricks. The important thing is not to respond to their goading,
hateful messages. It's from the responses they receive that they derive
their sickly pleasure. Don't let the *******s win.
Anna

Hello Anna,
Thank you very much for your post and the nice things you said. I have
changed my mind about contributing here and your post helped me to remember
that 99.9% of the people here are decent nice people who you could happily
meet in real life. In response to your comments as well as Kerry I will post
an edited version of the original question so that people not using the
Microsoft server can follow what is going on. I must confess I never read
those things myself, but if that is what it takes to avoid the abuse dished
out by David Candy (can you imagine a more inappropriate surname for
someone?-sweet and nice-I think not)then so be it. Like you I quite like to
give something back to folks who would not normally pay for consultant
services. I actually do not care much about personal abuse-I am secure
enough to deal with that-but yesterday was a very emotional day here in the
UK and those obscene remarks made by Candy really upset me. Anyway thanks
again Anna and also the people who emailed me to whom I will write
seperately.

This, and about twenty other posts with "" at the start of the
subject line, have just been downloaded into my Outlook Express with no
prior threads. And yes, my OE is set to keep threads together.

It seems to me that neither of you can accept that newsgroup servers
occasionally suffer accidents as all servers do, with consequential data
corruption.

Less of this unpleasant bickering, please.

Looks like dos to me all the same commands as dos
and if you look at the properties of command.com (which starts Command
prompt)
youll see that its a ms-dos based program and although dos isent used in the
operating
system of xp you can still run dos programs so there must be bits of it in
there somewhere

The black window is a terminal window. It runs any console program, type =

cmd.exe - a 32 bit windows console program. There is a command.com but =
any command typed there DOES NOT get executed by command but by cmd.

I copyied this from a microsoft web page

SYMPTOMS
When you try to open EXE files, you may get errors messages like: "Access

CAUSE
Corrupt registry settings or some third party product (or virus) can change
the default configuration for running EXE files. This may lead to failed
operation when you try to run EXE files.

RESOLUTION
1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. Type "command.com" , and then press Enter. (A DOS window opens.)

3. Type the following:
