I have several thousand of photo in addition to document images. While
I have a good folder system to keep them somewhat organized, I wish
there was a good freeware cataloging program. On that would collect the
file information on my photos and then give me the opportunity to tag
them with information that would then be searchable.

It would be nice it the information was transferred when I copy the
picture to another folder, or computer.

although it isn't free, adobe lightroom will do that and much, much
more, including face recognition and smart collections.

google photos is free, but you have to upload your photos to google,
which not everyone wants to do and may not be practical for large photo
libraries. on the plus side, it would be accessible from any computer
or mobile device, regardless of os.

Picasa ist still available. I have about 94,000 fotos in it and it`s
still very fast. It tags, but I have never used this feature.

Wouldn't this come under the category of Exif or Tag?
