It's not really relevant, but back when they cooked
it up they had a plan: the same OS and apps across
phone, tablet and desktop, with services and small
screens taking over. But then they ended up with no
phone and pretty much no tablet. So they have a
phone app system on a desktop. Woops.

It doesn't really matter if they were successful or not, a computer is not a phone, they're entirely different devices. Making one look like another is gross stupidity, like making a bicycle have the same interface as a car.

And it's not "the old and the new version." They are two *different*
browsers.

No, actually they're not. Edge is just IE with all the
IE-specific functionality stripped out. That's why IE11
is similar to Edge but can also be set to compat mode to
support ActiveX, VBScript, etc., while Edge cannot.

https://www.smashingmagazine.com/201...oject-spartan/

They forked mshtml.dll (the IE DOM DLL) to another
DLL, stripped out IE-specific things, may have added
a thing or two. (That's not clear.) And it uses the
IE9 javascript engine.

Is IE-11 non-compat mode the same rendering as
Edge? I don't know. For that matter, is Edge now the
same rendering as in the first version of Win10?

All versions of IE have been incompatible with
the last. That's no exaggeration. So if Edge varies a
bit in terms of rendering from IE11 that doesn't
make it a different browser. It's the same basic
thing underneath.

Actually, one of the big problems with Edge is that
it's still tied to Windows. It's not tied to the shell,
as IE is, but it's not a browser in its own right. So
even if someone gets a Win10 box to test their webpages
in Edge, which Edge are they testing? Win10 is updated
every 6 months. Does that mean there are now Edge
versions 1-5? What a mess!

Microsoft were trying, finally, to make a safe, compliant
browser in order to start off a new attempt at creating
a browser monopoly. But corporate IT depends deeply
on HTAs and the amazing functionality that IE can provide
when security is not an issue. So IE11 is there mainly for
compatibility and Edge is the stripped down version that
they tried to sell as "the not-IE MS browser".

Edge could be thought of as "between two stools".
It's broken as a version of IE. But given all the complaints
it's evidently not yet compatible with standards. And
now they plan to turn it into a Chrome clone so they
can make cross-browser webpage apps. So it seems
to be truly kaput.

Worrying about the government is futile.

Indeed, yet we keep on voting for them.... Ballot papers should have "none"as an option.

Interesting logic. So shoveling out horse stalls,
getting a flat tire, or using a spoon with a broken
handle are all wonderful once you know how
to do it? I wonder if we could extend this to
broken condoms and losing weight by eating
potato chips. It sounds liberating!

I use Metro. Where I live it's a Taxi company.

I sometimes use Metro. Where I live, it's a free newspaper, (mainly)
distributed in public transport.

And, AFAIC, Windows 10 is one of those things.

If you spend the time to learn it and how to - try to - circumvent
some of its quirks, it *still* sucks, only slightly *less* so.

Maybe some day, I'll have to (re-)downgrade to Windows 10, but that
won't happen until I *have* to, for whatever reason. Luckily sofar there
hasn't been any property/'feature' of Windows 10 which I, my programs or
my hardware need.

+1
& chocolate cream pie using pudding.

Now that's okay if it's the cooked pudding, but not the instant.

Just a note of clarification. "Native app" usually
refers to compiled software, as opposed to Metro
trinkets or webpage "apps" or Java/.Net software,
or any other "sandboxed" software that's not actually
compiled to native code (CPU instructions) and
therefore runs in some kind of VM or support
framework.

It sounds like what you mean is not that but
rather pre-installed Microsoft products.

Having microsoft in the name is a negative point in the
selection process. Preinstalled is not an issue.
Compiled is not an issue.
The issue is that the next version bears enough similarity
to the old version that I can operate the old capabilities
of the new version without a manual.

If you want preinstalled hell, try linux.
It's usual for the next version to have different
preinstalled/default
apps/utilities. It's rare for different distros to have the same
preinstalled/default apps. You can't even edit a text file without
going on a scavenger hunt to find out what editors are available.
Ain't choice great? Sure is if it's my choice. If it's
chaos due to other's capricious churning, not so much.

One of the latter was quite surprised when I printed off an instruction manual for her washing machine and didn't have to pay for it. She couldn't understand how Hotpoint could provide the manual for free. In the end I said it cost me 10p in paper.

I deal with a lot of retired folks that just don't want to
learn anything new. So far I have always been able to help
them, but with M$ playing hard ball with older versions of
Windows, that may change.

All the windows versions look pretty similar to me. So the start menu changes slightly, so what? You can always adjust it to the way you prefer.

I have a few on Fedora and Xfce configured to look like XP.
They can't tell the difference.

Classic Shell is a very good bit of freeware to make any Windows version look exactly like any other Windows version.

"Exactly" is too strong a word. But yes, it can make Windows 10 look a
lot like Windows 7.

Classic Shell is a very good choice, but in my opinion, Start 10 is
even better. Start 10 isn't freeware, but it's close enough--$4.99
USD, and it comes with a 30-day free trial.

LOL! I haven't had tapioca pudding in many, many years (60 years? 70
years?). I don't know what I would think of it now, but I remember
liking it as a child.

Where is your spirit of adventure ?

Just pretend they're "fish eyes". If your kid won't
eat it, that's what you tell them. That you had to
go through an entire barrel of fish and harvest all
the eyes to make that pudding. And how it was hard work.
The more gross the description, the faster they'll eat it.

Yes. While there is no major browser without problems, Firefox seems to
have the fewest. Some people like Chrome, but that is from Google.

Currently it tells me I have no internet
connection, yet every other browser works.* WTF?* And as per usual with
modern fluffy programs that act like a ****ing Apple Mac, all I get is a
silly cartoon with a confused looking alien saying no internet.* What
about some ****ing technical information so I can fix the problem?!?

I've noticed that about uninformative error messages.

BTW, The first thing I thought when looking at the desktop in the Windos
8 preview was "I really don't want a iPhone".
