KeyTweak, free, and allows you to remap pretty much any key.

Randyrants.com has a program to rename keys. Sharp Keys
which I have used. I have it on this Win 10 laptop to kill
the Caps Lock key. Don't know about the spacebar though. I
think you are pushing things too much.

Functionally, he needs to be able to easily and quickly apply
and reverse the substitution.

Technically, the space character is just like any other
standard character, it is easy for a keyboard macro program
to handle.

You can do much more than that to help with research.

That is something speech activated scripting excels at. Even
keyboard activated scripting would help greatly with that.
Not just talking about pressing the enter key, but there are
a few extremely useful macros that can help with research.

I use a few macros for that purpose, sometimes constantly
when researching or shopping for something. They eliminate
thousands of keystrokes and mouse clicks in a short period of
time.

"copy" double-clicks and copies the selected word under the
pointer (this simple one has always been my favorite)

"remove" double-clicks and cuts the word under the pointer

"delete" double-clicks and cuts the word under the pointer

"replace" double clicks and pastes under the pointer

"insert" clicks and pastes at the pointer location

Those are just a few examples of that type, useful for text
editing and searching. Another type works on text box
material...

"potter" clicks (with the pointer being in the text box),
selects and deletes the line, pastes, and presses enter

That one eliminates all sorts of work since it is repeated a
jillion times during research.

"patter" does the same as above, but it puts the pasted text
in quotes before pressing enter

There are many of such macros that save a jillion keystrokes
especially when doing shopping or research for extended
periods. If I did not use speech, I would use the numeric
keypad with NUMlock off. That gives you at least nine or 10
different scripts/macros. They fire a lot more quickly than
speech activated macros, which is advantageous if you do not
use speech for dictation and all sorts of other automation.
Keyboard activation is quick, but is good for only very
limited number of scripts.

Yes. But, err, how are you going to type a space?

Don't worry, I'm also working on a foot switch, if only it came with
English instructions!

"Extended-time Internet searching" means downloading images.

I don't have a clue how those two things equate, but I have never been the sharpest tool in the shed.

Norman, I think you are a lot sharper than Peter Jason! He has a lot
to learn.
