Default Desktop Icon Control

Looking for a free icon desktop control that will hide/show the desktop
icons with a control on the taskbar or ??? I want to turn on or off
visibility. Other features not required.

I tried Iconoid but it took over the Ctrl key. No go !

Need for Win XP and beyond.

Thanks.

I think you can select different keys in Iconoid - Options | Select Hot
Keys?

Need for Win XP and beyond.

Thanks.

Why do you want such a function?

Default Desktop Icon Control

Clutterness abolished. My desktop is covered with icons.

I have a toolbar I use for the icons I want available.

I would rather have a button to turn on and off the icon visibility
rather than having to remember complicated key sequences that must be
uses since many of my apps already use complicated enough keystroke
combinations.

Why not just right click on the desktop, view, hide?

I think you mean to un-check "Show desktop icons." I don't know why
I'd ever want to do that, but it's interesting that it's there.

What you need is to clean up your desktop and then exercise some
discipline about how you populate your desktop.

I have NO icons to applications on my desktop. When installing a new
application or updating an old one, I remove any icon that results from
that installation (after I make sure that the appropriate icon also
exists in my Start menu). After all, such icons are merely shortcuts to
the application and not the application itself.

My desktop is populated only with icons that are shortcuts to files and
folders that I frequently use. Those icons are arranged around the
edges of my desktop, leaving the center mostly empty.

Freeman,

In that case, why don't you put a folder link into the "Quick Launch" area
and put all those links in there ?

Or maybe add a folder to the "C:\Documents and Settings\{you name}\Start
Menu"(1) one, and have that folder appear in your startmenu in the same way
as the "programs" one, as a fold-out submenu.

(1) or right-click the "programs" entry, choose "open" or "explore", and go
one folder up.

Instead of having to switch them on/off everytime (and having to move
dialogs because they obscure the icon you want to click) the access to them
stays the same, regardless of what you are doing.

It works for me (even though I've still got a few on the desktop :-) ).

Regards,
Rudy Wieser

I have a mix. System stuff. e.g. My Computer, Control Panel. Workgroup
top left, shortcuts to drives top right, folders for media, apps, games
containing shortcuts to appropriate files bottom right, Temp, Docs,
Contacts, Web Links etc. bottom left. Gadgets on far right of dual
monitor system.

Works for me.
