Default USB2 cardbus shutdown

Hello,

I just purchased a Centen USB2 PC card cardbus.

Everytime that I put it in the slot the computer turns off. It doesn't go
through the shutdown process at all. What is going on? I have a Sony Vaio
FXA32. I bought this card for my 52x USB CD writer. The CDR works fine on my
builtin usb port ableit @ 4x. I WinXP pro sp1

Thanks,
Bryce

I would go to Device Manager and uninstall all entries for USB. Insert the
card in the slot and reboot. WINXP will then reinstall all USB drivers.

I have done that about 5 times, I can't even restart with the card in or it
will turn off in the middle of bootup. BTW The card works in another laptop
(compqa) just fine.

Thanks,
bryce

You appear to have something fundementally wrong with the OS. You have
demonstrated the card is OK so it must be the OS, assuming the fault does
not lie in the slot itself. I think your best approach would be to run a
"repair" on WINXP using your CD. That at least will ensure the OS is OK. I
had problems with my Belkin Card Bus USB2 Card, not so severe as yours, but
ended up doing a "repair" which fixed the problems I was having. Before you
do that have you tried downloading the USB2 drivers from MS and tried to
reinstall them? If not give that a go.

If that doesn't work, you appear to be in a Catch22 situation as from your
post I assume you do not have an "internal" CD drive. If that is the case
you may have to try to access your CD drive from DOS. You need to boot
using a DOS boot floppy disk with CD support and USB DOS drivers. I use
"duse" as USB DOS drivers. If you don't have a DOS boot disk you can down
load the software from www.bootdisk.com and search for "duse" using google.
If that works you will have access to your WINXP CD and hopefully be able
run the "repair" facility.

Hope this gives you some ideas to help solve your problem.

Well, I called Centin, the manuf., and they said since it worked in another
computer that the card was fine, and they had no other reports of that
problem in any other computers (though they were nice. Sony told me that
there was nothing they could do about it even if it is the computer since
the Belkin card worked)

I will return it and get another. Do you know of a brand that does NOT use
the NEC chipset?
The exact problem happend with a Buslink card also, but not with a Belkin
(All NEC)

Again does anyone know of a USB 2 PC card that does NOT have the NEC
chipset?

Thanks,
Bryce
