er ror: Close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management
So, too tricky for the MS support team that lurks on this=20
site? I ask a specific question and get no response from=20 them nor from rest of the forum. That usually means that=20 this is a tired site and the support team is pushed to=20 understand the issue. Nice try, Support. If I do not get any response I am=20 going to Linux. -----Original Message----- Attempted to do my homework on this one. Checked with=20 Dell Support regarding adding another SCSI hard drive to=20 my computer. They said OK up to 36GB but would not=20 support anything larger. Checked with the Maxtor=20 support=20 and they said a SCSI Ultra 320 was backwards compatible=20 with SCSI Ultra 2. Both are 68 pin. The homework was=20 the=20 easy part. Tried to install a Maxtor Atlas IV 10K 36GB SCSI Wide=20 320=20 LVD hard drive to my Precision 610 with latest bios. =20 Already have a Quantum Atlas 10K 9GB Ultra 2 LVD (as=20 page=20 file drive for Win XP Pro) and a Quantum Fireball 9GB=20 IDE=20 hard drive (as the boot drive for Win XP Pro). Also=20 have=20 a SCSI CD-ROM drive. SCSI ID is 0 for 9GB (boot drive),=20 6=20 for 36 GB (configured automatically), and 5 for CD-ROM=20 drive. The following are my attempts to get it initialized: .. under System/System Properties/Hardware/Device=20 Manager the devices are listed as Disk 0 Quantum=20 Fireball 9GB IDE Disk 1 Quantum 9GB SCSI Disk 2 Maxtor 36 GB SCSI .. however, if I click on the Volumes tab of the=20 Maxtor 36 GB SCSI drive it states Status: Not Initialized .. but, several attempts have been made to=20 initialize=20 using the Hardware Wizard .. have uninstalled and re-installed Adaptec SCSI=20 Ultra 2 controller driver .. when I go to Settings/Control=20 Panel/Administrative=20 Tools/Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management and=20 use=20 the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard it sees Disk 2=20 (the=20 one I am trying to install) when I attempt to initialize=20 I=20 get an error message "An unexpected error has occurred. =20 Check the System Event Log for more information on the=20 error. Close the Disk Management console, then restart=20 Disk Management or restart the computer" .. there is no record of an error in the System=20 Event=20 Log or any other log for that matter .. I have closed and restarted Disk Management=20 several times and restarted the computer several times=20 without success in initializing the new drive with Disk=20 Management . the SCSI Utilities = program only sees SCSI=20 ID 5=20 (the CD-ROM drive) .. removed the SCSI controller cable connector from=20 both SCSI drives and rebooted .. connected the SCSI controller cable to only the=20 new SCSI drive and rebooted .. still the same errors as above Any ideas? =20 . |
