No "Download Windows 10" icon?
A friend has Windows 8.1 on his laptop but did not yet receive the
famous "Download Windows 10" icon (is it called like that in English?) in the system tray. What can he do? Thanks for an answer! -- Carpe Diem "Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler" (Albert Einstein). |

Yes, provided your current Windows version qualifies for the upgrade and your hardware (PC) meets requirements. Check with the laptop manufacturer before doing the upgrade. Some are refusing to provide drivers for Windows 10 on older hardware. Depending on the laptop manufacturer, some of them upgrade to W10 just fine while some manufacturers have specified certain models will not be supported by them at all if you upgrade them to W10. Or in other words if you want drivers for things like keyboard function keys, touch pads, and the like to work you might have to hunt for them, if they exist at all. Many times the W8 drivers will work on W10 but not in all cases. If the laptop manufacturer did not support W8 with drivers, switching to W10 can be a nightmare in locating working drivers, or it might just work out of the box if you are lucky. I make backup copies of the hard drives before installing the W10 on machines for protection or "just in case it goes wrong". On those machines that actually do come up under Windows 10 after it's installed I usually run the free version of Driver Booster 3 just to see what kind of old drivers are on the machine after it is running W10. I have had it "fix" machines that were having problems as well as providing drivers that the laptop and desktop manufacturer claimed did not exist or just plain did not want to support due to the age of the machine. http://www.iobit.com/en/driver-booster.php |

When it's time to revert to Win8, use the backup image and do a restore, as that will do a cleaner job of putting everything back the way it was. The backup should be stored on an external drive. Don't forget to make the emergency boot CD provided by the backup software. Paul |

Yes it sure is as long as you have windows 7 8.1 or higher.
I did it on my other system with windows 8.1 and the nag box does not install. if you research on the news groups someone posted a bunch of updates by number you don't want to install that stops the upgrade nag program from installing in the first place. I am one of the smarter ones who knew this and never had that lovely nag icon in the task bar -- AL'S COMPUTERS "Carpe Diem" wrote in message ... Whatever he wants to do, the fact that the updates didn't offer the W10 icon is warning IMO. The laptop may not be W10 compatible, as already implied in other posts. W10 supposedly preserves enough of the existing OS that he can revert if necessary or desirable (but only in the first 30 days after installing W10. So my first step would be to backup everything. 2nd step would be to make repair media, something that should be done in any case. I tend to be paranoid about data loss, so I urge you to persuade him to buy an external drive and back up all data. 1TB drives are well under $100 these days. Cheap insurance IMO. There will also be room to image the whole system, which IMO would be a good idea too. Both routes...GWX app and the current 1511 download will perform a compatibility test prior to final installation. The GWX though provides this information from the icon in the tray on Win7Sp1 and 8.1 Update, the media creation route does it after Win10 setup starts the install process. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |
