Default Tweakui, small icons on Atl-tab

One thing I've seen in win7, I think, and I have in Vista, is that when
I use Alt-Tab to go from one program to another, instead of just a
program icon, it has a mini representation of the screen.

This is good when more than one web window is open, but in gereral it
takes me a lot longer to figure out which window is which, and I'd like
to go back to just seeing the icon only. Tonight when something went
wrong, it was like that for a little while. Then Vista recovered
itself.

But do any of you know how to make it permanent? Or what its name is
so I can google for it?

I thought that might be something Tweakui had, so I tried that before
posting here, but there doesn't seem to be an official Tweakui for 7 or
Vista. Any recommendations?

Thanks a lot.

They call them "Classic Icons" and "Thumbnail Preview" here.
And some .reg files are offered, for using one mode or the other.

Classic Icons
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\AltTabSettings = 1

Thumbnail Preview

You sure you are using Alt+Tab. That cycles through thumbnail of each
program (that has a window). Whichever thumbnail you select (before
actually selecting it), the associated window gets highlighted, too, so
you see the app's window with the linear slideshow of thumbnails in
front when using Alt+Tab

http://media.arstechnica.com/article...el-alt-tab.png

what you describe sounds more like the Aero theme feature of showing an
angled slideshow of windowed apps when pressing the Win+Tab key. This
one does not pop up the associated app window. It does not show a
linear slideshow of mini-views of windows. Instead it shows an angled
slideshow of previews of windowed apps (larger than the mini-view but
smaller than the app windows).

https://windows7support247.files.wor...ws-flip3d1.jpg

Then there are the popup mini preview windows when you hover over app
icons in the Windows taskbar. If a taskbar button is grouped then
hovering over it pops up mini previews of each window in the group.

http://cdn2.blogsdna.com/wp-content/...il-preview.jpg

If you are using Alt+Tab and don't want the thumbnails (but want to
continue using an Aero theme) then, as I recall, you disable Desktop
Composition as one of the advanced appearance options.

Control Panel - Performance Information and Tools - Adjust Visual
Effects: Disable "Enable desktop composition".

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...e-disable.html

You lose more than just Alt+Tab thumbnails when disabling Desktop
Composition.

Then Vista recovered itself.

You asked in a Windows 7 newsgroup so the above solution works under
that OS. I don't use Vista to know if the same option is available in
Vista.

I thought that might be something Tweakui had, so I tried that before
posting here, but there doesn't seem to be an official Tweakui for 7
or Vista. Any recommendations?

There is no compatible version of Microsoft's TweakUI for Windows 7.
For a TweakUI equivalent for Windows 7, look at:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultima...indows-7-vista

I remember using it for a very short time. Been too long ago to
remember but think I had problems with it so go rid of it.

One way of getting the thumbnails back, is to change the desktop from
one of the Aero-themes, to a none-Aero theme. Right-click on the
desktop, select Adjust (or whatever it is called in english), and the
select one of the basic themes.
There is another way via Controlpanel settings, but I don't recal
where.

It's some time since I used Vista, but in Win7 I prefer the Win button +
Tab; it gives you a better display.
And the Win button is right next to the Alt button.

Aha.

Exactly what I needed, Paul

I used his .reg files, saved both in case I want to go back.

I wouldn't go into the rest of thils if I didnt' think it likely applied
in win7 too. Oh, he even says it's win7!

Despite what he says about re-logging in or restarting, it took effect
immediately.

The other problems with the Thumbnails, which might have been changed
by the time 7 was released are the large translucent background, instead
of the opaque background in XP, and the outlining of the thumbnails in a
narrow, light-colored band that I had trouble noticing.

The advantage of the Thumbnails, like I said, is that there is a picture
of the window and if there are more than one windows from the same
program, one might be able to tell them apart. However the Classic
Icon version has a text caption for Firefox windows. In XP, the caption
was often missing, but at this one moment, I have 4 such windows, each
with a different caption. Maybe that's just by chance.

One more thing, when I tried doing what he says in the first box, using
the right-alt key and maybe right-Shift, I got the Classic Icons on a
one-shot basis, but I'm not sure what I had to do to get this, and I
havent' been able to do it in reverse. .

Very intersting. Cute. I'd seen this, maybe in a TV commercial a
couple times, but never in person before.

Thanks, and thanks Jesper.

Wow. I think I saw that in a TV commercial a couple times.

I turned that off as soon as I could. It annoyed me and obscured what
was underneath. The icon and text in the rectangles is enough most of
the time, and I'd rather go to the wrong window once in a while then
have all that popping up.

If a taskbar button is grouped then

My brother's computer had grouping, but I didn't like that either,
Maybe because I'm like a duck, and I get imprinted with whatever the
first version of Windows had. I know I'm like that a lot of the time.

hovering over it pops up mini previews of each window in the group.

I see that all this is new with Vista. Thanks a lot. I plan to get
back to with what I like or don't like, but it's going to take a long
time to review it all.

You lose more than just Alt+Tab thumbnails when disabling Desktop
Composition.

You asked in a Windows 7 newsgroup so the above solution works under

I understand, but I think everything you've said applies to Vista.
There are two Vista newsgroups, but they have no traffic. Heck, I
wouldn't be using Vista if my friend didn't give me a computer from his
office when he upgraded. He still has 3 more of them plus a server, and
doesn't know what to do with them.

I don't use Vista to know if the same option is available in
Vista.

I thought that might be something Tweakui had, so I tried that before

I'll be cautious. But it says it's the "ultimate", so I guess it's the
lastest and best!! It will take a while before I even know what most
tweaks refer to.

This is not a solution for your problem but a hint for tweak
applications for Windows 7.
There are 2 you can use:
Ultimate Windows Tweaker and Giga Tweaker 3.
I use both of them on my Win 7 Pro 64b.

Thanks. I've installed UWT but since I'm new to Vista, I have to think
about each option a lot more than when I was tweaking XP after 2 years
of use. I havent' found the problem Vanguard refers to yet, because I
havent' changed anything.

I will get Giga Twearker now.

I use both of them on my Win 7 Pro 64b.
