I am trying to install an HP Scanjet 5p on XP Home. XP will not install WIA
drivers. It asks for files from HP. How do I stop this and get the scanner
installed with WIA drivers please?

Obtain the correct drivers form HP, just as the OS is advising you.

As Bruce said, you can get all the drivers you need from HP. Keep in mind,
most scanners (and all-in-one devices) require that the drivers and other
software on the installation CD be installed before the device is hooked up.

Default scanner installation

Bruce and SC Tom,
Thank you for getting back. I have downloaded the updated drivers and tried
to install them. However, XP tells me it can't install the scanner. That's
why I began the quest of getting XP to use the WIA drivers. I have a computer
with Win XP Pro on it and the scanner installed without a hitch. Is it
possible that my XP files are somehow damaged and not reacting correctly? I
had the scanner installed once before, but for some reason XP stopped
starting the drivers. I can't remember now if they were the twain or the WIA
drivers. I don't use that computer too often. My wife routinely uses it and
is not happy that the scanner is not working. So, I am actually confused
about how to proceed. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

This is a fairly elderly scanner. It can be installed on XP but only with
the drivers provided by HP. XP has no built in support for this scanner.

M.I.53/4 (Luv the name),
Scanner problem solved.
Moved entire system to XP Pro. Problem solved. Pro installed scanner with no
human intervention. I was given notice that a scanner was found and that was
that. Works like a charm.
Oh! and just for the record. Windows XP Home version SUUUUUUUUCKKKKS!!!
I finally realized that was the actual problem from the start. I remembered
having difficulty when I first installed the scanner 2 years ago on Home
version.
KUDOS to everyone who took a shot at fixing this problem.

This seems strange because the scanner support for XP Pro and XP Home is
exactly the same.
