Default Win Msg replaced by MSN Msg?

On a particular XP machine, there is not the original Windows XP Messenger
(which was version 4.5, is that right?), but MSN Messenger 4.7.0105 instead.
T.120 functions works well, additionally installed MSNM 5.0 works well too.
Did MSN Msg *replace* Win Msg? Thanks for clarification!

Default Win Msg replaced by MSN Msg?

Greetings Thomas,

The original Windows Messenger in Windows XP is 4.0 -- there have been updates to 4.5, 4.6
and 4.7 since then.

There is no MSN Messenger 4.7.0105 -- however, if you engage compatibility mode on Windows
Messenger, it will show up as MSN Messenger, which is what is happening here. To turn off
compatibility mode, first shut down Messenger 4.7 (right click its icon and choose Exit),
click Start, point to All Programs and right-click the Windows Messenger shortcut an click
Properties. Then, click the compatibility tab, uncheck the box next to 'Run this program in
compatibility mode for' and click OK. Then go through the Start Menu again and run Windows
Messenger. It should now identify itself correctly as Windows Messenger 4.7.0105.

Note: MSN Messenger 5 and Windows Messenger 4.7 are separate applications, they do not
replace one another. Also, if you were to install MSN Messenger 4.x on Windows XP, it would
actually install itself as Windows Messenger 4.x.

Very helpful and clarifying, thanks a lot. Thus on XP is true:
MSN Messenger 4.x + XP video exchange = Windows Messenger.

As for the separately installed MSN Messenger 5.x: does it bring its own
video exchange feature, or does it use again the video exchange component
inherent in XP and used by MSNM 4.x?

Hi Thomas,

Actually both Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger 5 use the "Real Time Communication" API in
Windows XP. As such, it is identical.

Glad to be of assistance =).
