Default Replacing a 1TB HD with a Smaller SSD as C:

I'm thinking that I would like to have an SSD as my boot drive. I would
add it to my PC, format it and install Win 8.1 on it.

Eventually, I would link the populated directories on D: -- Documents,
Pictures, etc -- back to the similarly-named "places" on C:, so that the
actual files would stay on D:. That is, only the necessary system files
would actually reside on the SSD.

How can I estimate the necessary size for the SSD? At this point, I have
615GB free of 965GB on C:, so I'm using about 350GB for everything.

I'm not ready to spend over $200 for a 500GB SSD.

Thanks.

I'd get a drive as large as you can afford...a 250 gig should be fine
though.

Then see this

I have W7 installed on a 120GB (111.69GiB) SSD. 67,16GiB of free space
(8GiB page file included). You really don't need a 500GB SSD. I'd go for
240 or 250GB. Should be more than enough.

If you are planning on storing the bulk of your user data on the spinning hard
drive, then a 250GB SSD should be more than adequate for your operating system
and programs.

Thanks. How did you determine that?

Here is an excellent bargain, from Amazon, on one of the best SSDs on the
market, the Samsung 850 EVO 250gb for $120. See: http://amzn.to/1AXZ55a

Great! I'll check it out. Thanks.

I have W7 on a 48GB partition of a 64GB SSD, with plenty of apps too

Checking my own system:
All my programs, music, movies, photos, etc., use 173G of a WD500 black.
This is after years of collecting.

And another SATA hdd (1TB?) for all your data (documents, music,
pictures, movies, ...).
