Disable Internet Explorer 11

On 11 May 2014, Caver1 wrote in alt.comp.os.windows-8: So are you saying that Ken1943 posts using Google groups? If Ken1943 were I wouldn't see any of his posts. I have checked the thread a couple of times. And not in the same session. And just did this session. If he posted another time let him prove it. I see four posts from Ken. It's up to you to find them. He doesn't have to prove a damn thing. When a person thinks one of their posts hasn't been seen or read, they can say "Did you see my May 11,2014 post at 3PM?", as a means of seeking agreement that all posts can be seen by all parties. If the other person then doesn't see such a post, they can say "I don't see that one". Then they can wait 24 hours until it shows up. Sometimes, posts show up years later, or get unnecessarily repeated, when an index is rebuilt on a server somewhere. It's roughly the same as when I worked at the post office, and letters would fall down below the conveyor belt, and I would clean them out. Not all the posts stay on top of the conveyor belt :-) I used to look inside the machines at the post office, to see if I could find any really ancient letters in there :-) Just for the embarrassment value :-) Paul |

Disabling IE 11 in 8.1 only gets rid of or hides, depends on where you go which terminology is used, the files that IE needs to startup/run. The files that other application software needs. ie. Windows Update, is still there. Go to Microsoft.com and search for disabling/uninstalling, you can search for either, IE 11 if you don't believe me. I don't think you can uninstall IE 11 as there is no reference to IE 11 in Program and Settings in the uninstall programs part. Also IE 11 was built for Windows 8. Will IE 10 work in 8 I don't know. Microsoft also stated that they would be offering IE 11 to Windows 7 users in the future sometime. IE10 was included in Windows 8.0 IE11 was included in Windows 8.1 IE11 has already been released for Windows 7 (6 months ago i.e. last year) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=40902 -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps |

How is disabling IE screwing it up? Disabling cripples your operating system because it is integrated with the Windows system. without IE windows becomes a lame duck. No it doesn't. Do you really think that Microsoft would put such an easy option into their OSs and tell you how to do it, if you want, if it would cripple the system? Microsoft has put that option in Windows since XP. They have put the option to disable, not remove, IE. If you don't believe me go to Microsoft.com and search for disabling IE 11. Or you can look for my previous post where I put two links to MS's site where MS tells you how to do it and what it does. It states in the second link that the files that Windows needs for other functions are left in the system where those function can find them. -- Caver1 |

Do you really think that MS would give you that option and make it so easy to do and then tell you how to do it if it would if it would cripple Windows? At Microsoft.com MS states that Windows will run just fine if you disable IE. As the files that Windows needs are not hidden from Windows but the files that enable IE to run will be. This disable IE feature has been in Windows since XP. Go to Microsoft.com and search for this information yourself if you believe otherwise. I gave to links to MS for this information in an earlier post. Caver1 |

And from what the first link stated the disabling of IE has been an option since XP. So the rumor that you couldn't do it all these past years was just rumors and lies to keep people using IE. But you can't uninstall IE. Windows wont let you easily. You would have to do it manually and then you would break Windows. -- Caver |

That link only provides details on turning off Printing and Document Services (3 of the 5 are off by default) - disabling the other two Internet Printing and Fax and Scan doesn't turn off or disable IE. Really. I didn't know that. I couldn't figure out why my printer/scanner wouldn't work. Likewise changing Program defaults doesn't turn off or disable IE. Really? You really think so. This is a direct quote from the second link. Copy and paste. It is included in the second quote below; "In Set Program Access and Computer Defaults, you can make an app inaccessible without uninstalling it" Either your eyes are bad or you went somewhere else. I just clicked on that link again to triple check that it was good and it is. There is no mention of Printing and Document Services at that link. This is a copy and paste from that link; "How to turn Internet Explorer off Depending on which version of Windows you're using, there are two ways that you can remove access to Internet Explorer. Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1 users Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1 include functionality that allows users to remove all the visible entry points to Internet Explorer and to set another browser as the default. Once access is removed and another browser is chosen as the default, all Internet Explorer icons and menu entries will be removed and Windows will no longer automatically launch Internet Explorer." The second link tells you how to do it. No mention of what you stated above. again a direct copy and paste from the second link; "Set program access and computer defaults Applies to Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1 In Set Program Access and Computer Defaults, you can make an app inaccessible without uninstalling it. You can also set default apps for some common activities that will apply to all accounts on the PC. To start, open the Set Program access and computer defaults page: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.) Enter control panel in the search box, and then tap or click Control Panel. Under View by:, select Large Icons, and then tap or click Default Programs. Tap or click Set program access and computer defaults. Set program access If you want to make a program inaccessible without uninstalling it, you can set it so it doesn't appear where programs are typically listed. On the Set Program access and computer defaults page, under Choose a configuration, tap or click Custom. Clear the Enable access to this program check box next to the programs you want to make inaccessible, and then tap or click OK. Notes You can make a program accessible again by reselecting the check box. Changes you make to program access will be applied to all users on this PC. Some non-Microsoft programs might continue to show icons even if you clear the check box for that program. On the Set Program access and computer defaults page, under Choose a configuration, select one of the following:" If changing settings in Program defaults wont do anything why is it even there? And why was IE still shown as the default there after I set and rechecked that Firefox was default. Why was IE still shown as default after it was disabled? By the time that I was looking there I was trying to find a reason why my problem was happening. That's why I went and took all file associations that were still linked to IE away from it after it was disabled. Those files had to be associated with something now that IE was disabled. With evidence from the quotes from the links above, and your statements of what you found, I believe that you never went to either one of them. -- Caver1 |
