Default 25 Optional Windows Updates

I have 25 optional Windows updates staring at me.

They all say stuff like,

Recommended Update
Install this update to resolve issues in Windows. yada yada yada.

Other than visiting each KB page, is there any way to determine whether
or not installing any or all of these is a reasonable thing to do?

Thanks.

New computer with Windows 8.1 last Wednesday. I had selected
"Install only important updates" and also installed Firefox,
Thunderbird and MS Office with a regular product key.
Nothing else.
On Thursday I experienced an eternal loop. After two hours I
had not even got to the start screen. No boot at all. The
only solution I found with another computer was restarting,
going into secure mode and choosing a restore point from
Wednesday. Then I had the "pleasure" of spending half a day
reinstalling those programs with their relevant settings,
including all bookmarks, e-mails etc. from the last ten years.
So I reverted to what I did with Win XP. Never update, only
service packs when really unavoidable.
I read somewhere on the Web that last Tuesday's Windows
updates were somehow crappy. Look for such pieces of
information and tell us if I was just extremely unlucky.

If an update is offered, it should be installed. If you have properly
maintained your computer and updated the all the programs as updates are
offered you should have no problems.

You are not in a position to judge the ultimate effects of the upgrade.
What you don't know can hurt you.

I've always installed recommended updates. Never had an issue.

To Alek: I just click on the link and look at the kb article. I've seen stupid things like 'solves remote desktop yada
yada' things. I just hide them at that point so I don't have to wade through them again.

Wow, you're right that's more than the 2 or 3 I normally see. Still some of these are items I don't want/need and one
even cautions that if you load language packs afterwards the patch is broken.
They're optional... forget them is my resolution.

I would do that, but reading 25 KB articles somehow doesn't seem like a
fun use of my time. :-)

Thanks.

If the April update the only one that should be cautionary is 3038314
IE's cumulative update.
- If you use or plan to use and configure additional Search Providers
besides Bing (e.g. Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Youtube, etc.) it is
necessary to install those additional add-ons and accelerators prior to
installing 3038314. If not done in advance prior to installing the
update that option will no longer be available.

The question is have you noticed any visible problems with you daily use of
weindows 8.1. If not you won't need to install them. if you have install and
try.

Regardless of the OS who really knows if an update will improve the OS
Example i still use windows 7. in virtualbox. It does every thing i want it
too. I have windows 8.1 it does every thing i want it to do.

See my point.

If an update is offered, it should be installed. If you
have properly maintained your computer and updated the all
the programs as updates are offered you should have no

Perhaps you missed a point. My computer was brand new, out
of the box. Which maintenance am I supposed to do on
Thursday on a computer which was started for the very first
time on Wednedsay???

Every item in Windows Update comes with a description.

Many of the updates will be for security purposes
(to prevent certain exploits from happening).

Some updates are "optional". They are functionality fixes
for obscure situations. For example, maybe one of the updates
was Romanian Daylight Savings Zone definition. If you were
Romanian and saw that optional update, you would be very
interested. The rest of us, not so much.

Windows Update also offers hardware driver updates.
*Do not* accept or apply Windows Update hardware drivers.
They are poorly curated and cause problems. The hardware
manufacturer is the best source of files for such purposes,
and only as a means of fixing a defect in the driver.
(For example, if your Wifi is dropping out, maybe
a driver update will fix it.)

So yes, there are bound to be items available on
Thursday, for a Wednesday computer, that should be
applied. Just not the Time Zone update that
hardly anyone cares about.

Some of the optional ones, can include things
like security certificates. If a certificate
provider has been hacked, and their certificates
are no longer valid, you may want to include
such an update so you don't inadvertently rely
on bad certificates.

You don't have to read the whole KB. In most cases, the title and the first
two or three lines will tell you if you need to install it.

I just did that yesterday with the 20 optional updates I was offered. Out of
the 20, 4 concerned my hardware and installed software, 3 were "maybe", and
13 I hid so I don't get asked about them again. Took me maybe 15-20 minutes
of research (click "More Information") to determine that, and maybe 10-15
minutes to install the 7 selected and reboot. No troubles so far :-)
