Hp printer and Windows 10 problem, fixed.
I wasn't going to upgrade so soon but for some reason the computer
decided it was time, quite painless really except I had no printer, the only problem with the upgrade. HP Photosmart D5460 wasn't there, couldn't get it to register, OK it's not a cutting edge printer but as a tight Yorkshireman who has a set of carts unused I wasn't going to be beaten. I downloaded the Windows 8 drivers form HP and ran them, failed, unintalled old stuff, rebooted and tried again, failed, this happened several times. I stopped and went and watched some TV, had a thought, open the exe file in WinRAR, copy to HD and run from there, installed perfectly, I now have a printer. I'm still exploring 10 but first impressions are favourable, time will tell. Mike -- Michael Swift We do not regard Englishmen as foreigners. Kirkheaton We look on them only as rather mad Norwegians. Does that mean the circa 2010 installer package (http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/.../model/3396079) failed to recognize Windows 10 as a supported platform? It may not even run on Windows 8 (released in 2012). http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/p...01_title_r0001 Doesn't list Windows 7 as supported, so obviously Windows 8 & 10 may not be supported. Of course, that might be the initial specs page and HP updated the driver since then to support later versions than Vista. What does "fail" mean? |

I went to control panel, hardware and sound, devices and printers, and used the Add Printer. The first time I tried to find the HP printer in the list it was not there after a few tries a list of old printers was downloaded and the HP932 was on the new downloaded list. |

The first time I tried to find the HP printer in the list it was not there after a few tries a list of old printers was downloaded and the HP932 was on the new downloaded list. If the printer is old (but not too old) and had enough users then the drivers may be included (embedded) in Windows or generic mini-drivers (definition files) can be used. So Windows may include the old printer in its list of already supported devices. Sounds like that is what happened with you. I went into Windows 7's add-printer wizard, looked up the manufacturer list for HP but there was no D5600 model family listed. However, later versions of Windows, like 8 or 10, might have the D5640 (or the D5600 family) listed since this printer may be new for Win7 but is old enough for Win8/10. In the Win7 add-printer wizard was a "Windows Update" button. It downloaded an updated printer list ("Windows is updating the list of printers. This might take a few minutes."). Took awhile, like 4 minutes. More HP printers were listed but still not the D56xx. Not all printers makers and not all models of them are provided via Microsoft. Also, the OP never mentioned the bitwidth of Win10 whether 32- or 64-bit. Drivers MUST match bitwidth of the OS. No mention of Windows 10 bitwidth. No mention if "downloaded the Windows 8 drivers" were 32- or 64-bit. Bitwidths must match. |

Mike So it looks to be an installer issue, not a driver issue. Hmm, wonder if HP's installer doesn't recognize Windows 10 or rejects any version of Windows outside some range it tests for Windows versions. |

Only after I tried to install a substitue did it download the driver pack with the correct driver. |
