Default After upgrade, updates are broken 0x8024402f

Upgraded from 8.1 to 10 OK, had received three KB updates and the
daily(?) Defender updates OK, but now all I see is

"There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later.
If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support
for information, this may help: (0x8024402f)"

tried an "sfc /scannow"

As admin, I tried the .bat file from 7forums that includes all the
commands recommended by MS in
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

tried with firewall temporarily disabled.

No dice, anyone else?

I removed the most recently installed "security update", rebooted no
different, ran the troubleshooter from control panel, and now it's
offering to install a cumulative update and a flash update, so it seems
to have kicked it back into life ...

Which sounds exactly like the scenario that has affected me with
previous versions of Windows, and could be the killer of W10.

Apart from all the other peculiar scenarios, I know of a good number of
people who have Windows machines attached to particular pieces of
hardware, and who use them or go online to update them at long
intervals.

I have often had to enable updates in sections to discover which one of
the hundred or so was causing the whole update process to fail. I don't
see how to do this in Windows 10.

None.

Anyway, the 0x8024402f error is now back, but can be made to go away by
unticking "give me updates to other Microsoft products along with
Windows updates" or whatever it's named ...
