Default USB Network Adapter

I use a USB netowrk adaptor to connect my desktop to our net. My
module does not have a driver for Win 10.

Can one recommend a "Good" adaptor brand/ model. I see a lot
advertized, but most do Not indicate Win 10 compatability.

Thanks

Have you tried the Windows 7 or 8.1 drivers for your existing adapter?

Thanks for your prompt response. Yes I did try your suggestion.

When I tried to install the network drivers, from the mfgr's CD, I get
an error message akin to "Not for this OS". At the manufacturers web
site, there is no Win 10 driver available for DL.

New (faster?) adaptor's, are for sale on Amazon for under $20. I am
most willing to buy a replacement Adaptor, but I surely would like to
buy a known/ preferred device!

Yes, but we don't know what we're replacing, do we.

802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac ... etc.

We need to know:

1) Make and model number of Wireless Router you are using.
2) Make and model number of Wifi adapter you seek to replace.
This is to check how appropriate the adapter was,
for the router you were using.
3) We know the only OS to be supported is Win10.
No other OSes, right ? No Linux for example ?
4) On the laptop, do you have a USB2 port available
or a USB3 port available ? USB3 ports are powder blue
in color. USB2 tend to be black plastic.

I have an AT&T Uverse account, using a wireless router mfg by Cisco.
I will only use Win 10, on a desktop.
I had a Generic wireless adaptor, than ran fine with Win 7 - but not
Win 10. I gave that item away, thus not sure of the make/ model.

wireless router mfg by Cisco --- 802.11b or 802.11ac ? One is slow.
One is fast. Check back of Cisco for

There is something that is not clear in this discussion. When you say
"USB network adapter" does this mean there is no wireless on the
computer itself?

If there is no wireless connector, can you connect to the ATT Router
using a hard wired cable through the RJ-45 LAN port. On most routers
there are several RJ-45 LAN port for hard-wired connection between the
router and computer or print servers. These cables can be purchased in
many different lengths. RJ-45 LAN port has been a standard port on
computers for many years. The only requirement is that the cable with
the RJ-45 plugs, is long enough to reach from the computer to the router.

If the computer has wireless capacities there will be no problem
establishing connection to the LAN, IF you have enter the passcode
correctly. In this case drivers area not a needed.

Most LAN adapters today come either with 802.11n OR 802.11ac both are
backwards compatible. 802.11ac is ( as I understand) not a true
standard and each LAN devices manufacturer has there own version which
may or may not be compatible with other manufacturer. I would not buy a
LAN device that had only 802.11b or 802.11g.

If you are talking about an Wireless LAN adapter that plugs into a USB
port and looking for drivers; have you gone on the manufacturer's
website? I had a problem with the manufacturers drivers for a
Bluetooth device I bought. I found that I did not need to add
manufacturer's driver as there was a driver available from MS that ran
the device perfectly. Some times we spend too much time looking for
manufacturer's drives.

The speed of the router while important, only has to be faster than the
ATT Uverse service that you pay for. I believe ATT has entry level
service for 3Mbps, and several higher speeds. ATT should have provided
a router that is capable of using the speeds that you paid for.
http://www.att.net/speedtiers

Unless you have an ultra fast connection to ATT, it is not important as
to the 802.11X. If you have a recent or buying a new router, it will
probably be 802.11n or better.

Please look at this site.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/8/802_11.html

As you can see from the data on the above site, even 802.11a is capable
of 54-Mbps in the 5GHz band. Compare to ATT basic service of 3MBPS

You probably can not find a router with only 802.11a or 802.11b today,
but both would be capable of handling the the ATT 45 MBPS; HOWEVER even
if you can find an 802.11a and 802.11b; I would pass it by, and only go
for a router that has a minimum of 802.11n, because of the extras that
have been added to the standard.

All that said you should buy as much as you can afford, or can get free
from your ISP provider.

I have a Virgin Media cable connection which is sent to my computer
upstairs, wire not an option due to distance, the USB dongle was
supplied by VM and connected automatically, under Windows 7 it would
fall over at least once a day and sometimes fail to connect on startup
or after sleep, in the several days I've had 10 it's connected every
time so I suspect 10 has installed new drivers.
