Yes and no. They've pulled the original release and issued a new one to
"insiders". Once it gets the ok from insiders it'll be released to the rest
of us.

Does this apply to the Win 10 1809 ISO downloadable by non-insider users?

And this is a good thing.

Relax.

I'm with the original poster. Would be easier to relax if any idiot
who talks about 1809 said whether or not he is an "Insider". I have
seen talk about 1809 thrown out as if everybody was getting it. It's
not spectacular if it's only given to Insiders. But I guess people
like to draw attention to their posts.

You had the option, on release day, to download the DVD
for 1809 and use it. I have the 32 bit and 64 bit DVDs
and used the 64 bit one.

It's the Windows Update method which might be triggered
by your Insider participation.

But a machine here which received 1809 when I wasn't
expecting it, via Windows Update, that machine is not
associated with Insider, and neither has an MSA ever
been used on the machine. It suggests if you ever
(remotely) took part in the Insider program, any
machine in your "flock" could be picked for an update.
They have plenty of sneaky ways of associating the MSA
I used on the other machine, with the equipment in
my "flock".

If I leave a 17134 install sitting idle today, it's
safe and won't get 17763. But that could change anytime.

None of "the computers"?

I'm still on 1803, I don't know what the posts about 1809 are about.

At the moment, you can use Heidoc to generate a download
URL for the old version of 1809. That's if you want
to test for the "data loss" problem. The materials
are still accessible.

That's 17763.1, which will update itself to 17763.55
with the recent Patch Tuesday.

Data loss can happen, if you or a program you use, moved
a Junction Point to a new value, in the home directory,
leaving an orphan directory behind with no pointer to it.
The folder could still have files. And Microsoft decided
it would be cool to delete that folder (while 1809 installs).
That's where the data loss comes from. Apparently, the usage
of OneDrive can change a Junction Point and trigger the behavior
(if you've been using OneDrive for quite some time and
the Junction Point was changed a while back).

At the current time, the Insider program offers 17xxx.yy
(new version of 1809 without data loss feature) if
you set your Insider program disk to "Slow" ring. I just
flipped mine to see what would happen.

https://i.postimg.cc/y8LmHvB0/slow-ring.gif

Once that install is finished, it will update itself
to 17763.104 using another patch. (The Release people
shouldn't see that yet.)

If you have your Insider set to "Fast" ring, you'll be
getting 18252. That's what mine said before I changed the
setting to "Slow".

That's the confusion. Originally (2nd Oct) it was released to everyone,
then pulled (06/10) and since 11/10 is re-released only to the insider
track.

This is an Insider disk on the Slow Ring. Install complete.
Patched to date. And that would be the candidate "new" 1809
versus the data loss version of 1809.

So when the previous beta tests failed to stop premature release
(although apparently beta testers did spot the problem), they're
just repeating the exercise? What's to prevent the same premature
release to the rest-of-the-world?

They were suppose to add a field to Hub entries
indicating severity. To help single postings of
trouble get the visibility they need.

As for the testing itself, surely you're not expecting
Insider testing to catch things?

Apparently this problem raised an issue in their reporting system, which
they have also fixed.

unwittingly involved in the insider program.

Hey guys,
I received the 1809 thru normal Windows updates on Oct 3rd. Actually, I
was surprised when both my main workstation and my laptop came up with a
"Want to schedule a restart today?". I looked around and sure enough it
had installed on both machines (unknown to me). So I did a restart on
each and everything came up just fine.

A couple of days later, I heard all the bru-ha about it being pulled.
So far I have seen no problems and my Android Studio workbench seems to
be speedier during compiles. So far, I'm pleased.

The problem occurred for those who moved their default Downloads,
Documents, Videos, etc. folders to another drive or partition. 1809
deleted everything in those folders. You obviously didn't do that.
