Brother printers are grrrrrreat. At least this one is. MFC-J625DW
Those of you who view my computer life as a soap opera may remember that Feb of 2017, I started about 5 days in advance and tried to write a bat file that would print a test file whenever the scheduler said to, to keep my printers from drying out when I went away for 80 days. I sought some advice here. I couldn't get one part written, but suprisingly, neither printer dried out. I'd been led to believe, by conspiracy folks I guess, that they were designed to do this so that you would have to buy a new printer. Though later I learned you can actually run out of ink while not using some or all inkject printers because newer ones do something every once in a while to keep from drying out. So I guess it's the opposite of designing them to fail. The following February, I started 3 weeks in advance, and I finished the previous year's bat file and it printed a very nice image that uses all the colors. But I still couldn't get the Scheduler to work right. I never can. I would schedule something for 5 minutes from now and it woud never run, iirc. I was only gone 2 months this time and I wasn't suprised the printers had not dried out. I could tell the bat file had not run because there was no paper on the output trays, but I ran it then and got good results from both printers. Printing the test file used up almost all the magenta ink and all the black ink in the Brother printer. One would think that anyone who went to all this trouble to not dry out the printer would replace the cartridges right away. But I didn't need to print anything. And I let it go 5 months. I was almost sure I'd ruined the printer and no amount of rubbing alcohol could bring it back to life. (Its ink is arranged differently from the Epson which I was able to unclog with a paper towel soaked in alcohol, I think it was.) Every time the computer came on or out of sleep there was a warning box, but I did nothing. Finally I needed to print something, a couple days ago. I put in the new cartridges, didn't actually print for a few hours, and everything came out fine!!! Including red. Today I tested the green. Brother MFC-J625DW, color printer, copier, scanner, fax, double-sided, wifi, that I got for free, looked like new, found on the grass next to the curb, not far from my home, and the resident of the house confirmed that I could have it. Needed two cartridges when I found it. I suspect it belonged to his roommate and that they didn't part on the best of terms. Assuming he had a roommmate**. It even can print straight from the phone, though I haven't done that yet. (too complicated for me!) They don't sell this model anymore but maybe all their inkjet models are like this, or at least one similar to this one. (all the ink cartridges are accessible from an exterior door in the front right face of the printer.) And I use cheap ink!! So it went 5 months without being used, which alone I thought was more than enough to clog it, and it did so with an empty black cartridge. (And if it uses ink to keep from getting clogged, I was sure the absence of black ink would guarantee that it got clogged.) **There was a case on the People's Court where a woman he was doing a favor for never picked up two wiyyyyde screen tvs and after he could fairly call them abandoned, he said he put them on the street. The judge, illustrating a bad habit of hers, said she thought he was lying and that he sold the tvs, but I don't think he was lying. I think it was like this printer. I can't find a picture on ebay but I did find that if you buy 100 at a time, you can get black cartridges for 54c a piece! |
