Default cryptographic services ???

I am using windows XP on a DELL P4 1.8G with 512M RD ram. I always do the
windows updates , but I can't get the last few updates to install, I keep
getting a failure to install , and when I check the messages, it says make
sure your cryptographic services are running.
I did a bit of tweaking a few months ago, but never had a problem until now.
Anybody have any idea what this means.
Thanks:
Ian

Make sure that the Cryptographic Service is set to Automatic and it is
Started. You can access the Services by going to Start/Run, type in
services.msc and pressing OK. Double click the Cryptographic service and
select Automatic and then Start the service.

If you still have trouble after enabling the Cryptographic Service, delete
the contents of the
Windows\System32\Catroot2 folder before trying the install again.

Thank you very much Ronnie, it worked beautiful I only know I wish I knew
how you knew, and why it worked??? My cryptographic services were running,
but my catroot2 was full....what is it used for?
I spent the last 4 hours messing with it doing system restore etc, and you
fixed it in 5 seconds. I truly appreciate it !!!
5 stars ***** to Ronnie Vernon.

From a previous post by MVP Kelly:

Go to Start/Run and type in CMD. At the command prompt, type the following
commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Go back to Windows Update and try again.
