My understanding is that the Windows Media Player is no longer included
in WIN 8 and is an extra cost option. What player (free) is recommended
for WMV files in Win 8?

No, no, it's still in there with the Desktop.

Thanks Ed. I'm about ready to upgrade my laptop.

Windows Media Player *is* included. What you are thinking of is
Windows Media Center. As usual, Microsoft has worked hard to confuse
people by using very similar names for two very different things.

And you can get Windows Media Center for free. Read he

Media Player is included in Windows 8
- two versions of Windows 8 are available to the public Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro

Media Center requires Windows 8 Pro
Media Center is free for Windows 8 Pro during the promotion period (ends on Jan 31, 2013)
Windows 8 (non Pro version) requires upgrading at an additional cost to Pro to obtain Media Center
Media Center after the promotion period will cost $10 to add to Win8 Pro.
