Startup
I need to know what I need to keep running from selective
startup, In my win 98, I leave explorer and my virus scan running, in XP there is no guide that says what has got to be running. I want to stop all other programs from starting, and leave only what is required. There are soooooo many things starting up and running all the time that is is unbelievably slow, what are the names of the basic, needed programs. Explorer is not even on the list. Thanks to any who can help. |

You need nothing other than your anti-virus.

This question is posted quite often in these groups. There are no hard and
fast rules for what applications should and should not start with Windows. It's really your decision, because only you can decide what is important to you. Many people would say to let your virus scanner start with Windows, but others will tell you not so. If you rely on DirectCD, for example, you'll want to have it start with Windows. And so on. You really need to understand what is running at startup, so you can decide if it's important to you. This web site, and others like it, will help you in your research: www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm The goal is not to have 'as little as possible' running at startup. The goal is to have only those applications that are important to you running at startup, and no others. Take your time and don't make any adjustments until you understand exactly what you're doing.
