Default There is an alarm sound coming from my computer

I just bought Fritz 14 chess. When it is thinking about a move, the
computer makes an alarm.
How to I go about tracking down what I need to do to fix it?
If I close the chess program the alarm stops.

Follow these steps in this order:

1) Turn off the computer;

2) Unplug the computer;

3) Flip the circuit breaker or remove the fuse that controls the power
outlets in the computer room;

4) Throw a dead animal across the utility wires coming into your house
to cause a short and disrupt power to your neighborhood;

5) Stage a protest at your local power plant, thereby convincing the
government to convert to solar power.

That should take care of the problem for a week or two, hopefully
giving you enough time to read the fine manual.

Oh Lord I pray...
Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
The good fortune to run into the ones I do like,
And the eyesight to tell the difference.

Look in the Fritz preferences, and see if you can
reduce the number of CPU cores it uses at one time.

Fritz chess is one of the few computer games, capable
of symmetric loading of all CPU cores. In other words,
it's going to make the CPU hot... It's a test of the
cooling system. A lot of other computer games, the
"boss" thread runs 100%, the other threads typically
cannot fill a core on their own. The result is
the CPU won't be running as hot.

The alarm comes from the BIOS, and signals either the
CPU is overheating or the VCore regulator has a problem.
Making Fritz use less CPU cycles, might temporarily
allow the CPU to run cooler.

This must be a desktop computer, as a laptop
doesn't typically have that alarm feature.

Check the cooling is working properly, the fins
on the CPU cooler are clear and allow adequate
airflow. And that the fan is spinning and
moving air.

When someone builds a computer, they are supposed
to load the CPU to 100% and check the temperature.
Also, check that the VCore regulator is OK. On
my newest computer, the VCore runs at 60-65C when
Prime95 is running, which is way too high. And in
danger of going into thermal runaway. But these
are the things you learn while testing and tuning.
I added additional cooling to VCore, although what it
really needs, is an entirely new heatsink design. The
heatsink isn't nearly big enough for the poor
electrical performance.

And read "Kissing Hank's Ass" (http://www.jhuger.com/kissing-hanks-ass).
Best done at the same time as the above.

A laptop usually turns itself off when overheated, with no indication of
why. I have one (Dell) that does this often.

Check the cooling is working properly, the fins
on the CPU cooler are clear and allow adequate
airflow. And that the fan is spinning and
moving air.

I couple of years ago, I put together a system with a fast CPU (AMD
4GHz, 8 core. I think FX-8350). With the included cooler, it was getting
as hot as 79C and the fan sounded like a leaf blower. Adding a cooler
with a larger heat sink & larger fan helped both problems.

My PC normally runs with barely audible PSU, CPU and case fans, but if I run
anything CPU intensive (even a disk defragmentation, sometimes, will trigger
it) the CPU fan speeds up to leaf blower speed. Closing other windows (even
if the apps are sitting there dormant) sometimes helps.
