Default Windows Media Player has no sound?

My speakers are working, and I have no idea where to look to see what
has changed in WMP, because I haven't used it in several months.

I have no intention of upgrading to WinX, and after weeks of MS changing
descriptions of updates from Optional, to Recommended, to Important,
and/or dropping any useful descriptions ... I got tired of spending my
days chasing info on them and stopped them altogether.

I know the security risks, etc., but I'm wondering if I had already
installed some updates affecting WMP? Anyone have any suggestions on
what I should check and or anything I can do to restore WMP on my Win7 pc?

If MS has succeeded in disabling my WMP use, they are just moving me
closer to the date I switch to Linux or Apple.

You did not say what you use WMP for.
There are MUCH better alternatives.
I dumped WMP back around 2001 and use MPC, VNC, Screamer, Goldwave, etc.

Go into Control Panel Sound and try different settings to select the
sound source.

snipped the venting and vacuous promises

Windows 7 has separate volume level controls in its Mixer app. Maybe
you muted (zero volume, not actual mute mode) WMP's mixer volume. With
WMP first loaded, click the volume tray icon and click on Mixer. See
what volume level is selected for WMP in the Mixer. Well, might as well
check it is not muted, too.

While there is a volume slider inside of WMP, it will range between 0 to
100% of the max volume level set in the mixer. With both WMP loaded and
then the mixer, set the WMP mixer level to, say, 33%. Then slide the
volume control inside of WMP. You'll see the volume slider in Mixer
move from zero to the max level set there.

Sorry, Paul! I was trying to play music in the WMP library that I have
recorded from my DVD collection. However, since posting this I tried to
play one of my DVDs and it also had no sound ... but I noticed the sound
icon had a small red x. When I removed it the sound came back with the
disk ... and with the library. There was no indication in the library
playback.

When I looked through all the sound settings for devices, etc., there
was nothing muted. If it is blocked when I reboot tomorrow, guess I
will have to search again for what is controlling it.

I have VLC too as an optional player, just rarely use it. Thanks for
your patient response as always.

I absolutely refuse to use Windows Media Player. I have RealPlayer,
VideoLAN (VLC), and Winamp installed. VLC generally handles all kinds
of media, both streaming and files (e.g., DVDs, CDs). For some uses,
however, I prefer RealPlayer or Winamp.

Pharmaceutical companies claim their drug prices are
so high because they have to recover the costs of developing
those drugs. Two questions:

1. Why is the U.S. paying the entire cost of development while
prices for the same drugs in other nations are much lower?

2. Manufacturers of generic drugs did not have those
development costs. Why are they charging so much for generics?

If it happens again tomorrow, I'll see if my vacuous mind can follow

My favorite was MusicMatch which Real Player swallowed up. I only
use WMP for the DVDs I recorded for lazy listening.

I downloaded VLC some time ago, but still haven't tried it.

My recommendation for sound issues, is to start with the
sound icon in the tray. It has separate parts for
"record" and "playback".

http://i43.tinypic.com/rj1owi.jpg

It also has selectors to redirect output to "digital audio",
which might attempt to travel over your HDMI cable. If you
re-installed a video driver for example, one with a
digital sound driver package inside the same folder, it can
reinstall digital sound, and "grab" audio from the existing setup.
Looking in the Sound icon and all those sub-menus, would be a way
to sort it out. The speakers you're using right now,
might well be on the analog audio choice.

I can only remember buying three computer programs in my life, (my computer
life started in 1982), and MusicMatch was one of them. Sadly, I never
installed or used it.

Why not MPC-HC?

I won't go into all the details. However, I marked RealPlayer's
cookies.txt as read-only, preventing the storage of cookies.
