Default Dual screen: One desktop, one not. How to do ?

Hello All,

I would like to attach a second screen to my 'puter, but do not want to
stretch my desktop to that second screen (one is a monitor, the other is a
TV screen). How would I do that ?

I've googled for it, but did not see much but for the two-screen, single
desktop configuration. What I (think I) need is two seperate desktops, each
on their own monitor.

I'm asking this because I do not want to run the chance that an app by
accident gets started on the space of the second monitor (the TV screen),
which at that time could off or be occupied otherwise.

In short: Is there a manual available that describes how to do that (and how
to switch between those two seperate screens/desktops)

Regards,
Rudy Wieser

Standard SVGA connection, just as my primary monitor. It ofcourse also has
chinch and scart too, but those are not compatible with my videocard :-)

How come you ask ?

Because to handle a TV Screen off a computer you need to connect a computer
to it and there are a few connectors; VGA, DVI, HDMI, Y-B-G RCA, and
RF/F-Connector. That gives us a starting point.

To connect it to your computer you will have to connect it to a video card
capable of driving two monitors. Either a card with a dual VGA "Y" cable or
a card with dual VGA ports on the card. Otherwise you will have to
supplement the video card already in the PC with a PCI card with a VGA port.

I had an end-user who wantged three monitors. He was using a Dell
Latititude D630 notebook with a miniture "D" series docking station. One
monitor was connected via VGA, the other molnitor was connected to the DVI
port whichj were on the docking station. I replaced the miniture "D" series
docking station with a full sized "D" series docking station and installed a
PCI video card in the docking station. The PCI card had a VGA port which
colnnected to the third monitor. He loved it. MS Excel in one screen MS
Outlook on the second screen and his DeskTop on the third.

I once tried a video exapansion device. It was an external VGA device with
three VGA outputs (Left - Middle - Right). It had software run on the PC
and allowed the screen to vitually show over three monitors. It was a
cludgy solution at best and was tossed oin the circular file.

Reading back I see that my "I would like to attach a second screen to my

:-\

Yes, I have few PCs with double video-output (two with double DVI, one with
SVGA and a RCA or S-video). I might have skipped that information as I
thought that, for my queste to succeede, that would go without notion.

I also did once successfully configure one of them to have one desktop
stretched over two outputs, meaning that both the OS and hardware are
actually capable of handling two seperate screens.

The question was therefore aimed, or so I thought, at configuring the OS (XP
pro, sp3).

To use two monitors, you will have two maybe three utilities. There will be
at least one, maybe two Control Panel applets. One is a MS Display applet
and the other *may* be Manufacturers Display applet. The third may be a
manufacturer's display control utility.

The simplest but most relevant is the Microsoft Display applet. It is
basically the same as if you Right-Click on the DeskTop -- properties --
settings.

You should see two screens. You can identify them and a 1 will appera on
one screen and a 2 will display on tghe second. Here you can change the
screen reference to each other. Who is on the left or right or ontop or
below by moving one of the two screens in relation to the other. Whichever
is the Primary gets the DeskTop. Using the manufacturer's Control Panel
applet or utility you can modify that even further such as rotation of the
display 90 degrees, etc.
