Default FAT32 to NTFS

Has anyone converted the FAT32 to NTFS within Windows XP?
Does anyone know if it re-formats the hard drive
therefore eliminating all your data?

Windows XP is also running a file check disk before
booting up along with a free space check is that normal?
It never used to do it and it does not always run it,
sometimes it does and sometimes it does not? I am
technologically challenged and therefore need all the
help I can get, thanks.
